Associate Research Technician


We are seeking a research technician to join the laboratory of Aravinda Chakravarti in the Center for Human Genetics and Genomics at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Our lab utilizes cutting-edge, high-throughput genetic, functional genomic and computational technologies for dissection of complex genetic diseases. This position will play a critical role in the lab’s functional studies of Hirschsprung disease, a disorder effecting the enteric nervous system, as well as studies of autism and cardiovascular diseases. The responsibilities of the role include performing basic laboratory techniques and a variety of experiments under supervision. Additionally, they will contribute to the organization of the lab and provide support for experimental research, including general mouse colony maintenance, such as breeding and genotyping. The position will work under general supervision.

Job Responsibilities:
  1. Lab Duties – Genotyping and breeding of mouse models. General techniques in genetics and molecular biology (DNA/RNA/protein extraction, sequencing). Under supervision may perform more advanced lab experiments. Assist in ordering and tracking of laboratory supplies. Maintain careful laboratory notes of all experiments performed.
  2. Procedure/protocol development – Assists in implementing new procedures and protocols to support experiments. Participates actively in developing, recommending and implementing new procedures, or modification to existing protocols/procedures. Maintains and updates technical knowledge.
  3. Communication – Cooperates, communicates and relates well to all levels in the lab. Listens carefully to others in order to respond appropriately, answers questions or obtains needed information. Communicates ideas, problems, suggestions, and messages in a timely and effective manner. Maintains the confidentiality of all research information.
  4. Judgement/Decision-Making – Is able to recognize problems as they occur, and through the application of appropriate policy/procedure, determine and recommends the appropriate solution. Seeks guidance as necessary for the performance of their duties, asks appropriate questions when in doubt and utilizes reference sources/materials to endure accuracy. Advises appropriate personnel of situations/problems requiring intervention or follow-up.
  5. Performs other research duties as relevant and assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
This is an entry level position with no specific experience necessary. An undergraduate degree in life sciences is preferred. Previous experience with mouse handling is strongly preferred. Molecular biology and tissue culture experience would be a plus. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, or a related field. Experience working with mouse models.
Working Conditions:
Research lab setting. This is a fully onsite position.
