Postdoctoral or a Research Assistant Research position

Postdoctoral or a Research Assistant Research position available immediately

The Lindsley F. Kimball Research Institute of the New York Blood Center

Laboratory of Molecular Parasitology

We are seeking candidates for a postdoctoral position or a Research Assistant position that will involve projects that center on the discovery of novel means to support the prevention and elimination of onchocerciasis, also known as river blindness, and lymphatic filariasis, also known as elephantiasis. To achieve this, we study the basic biology of Onchocerca volvulus and Brugia malayi, the causative agents of these diseases, respectively, as well as the mechanisms by which the host-parasite interactions support the survival of these human parasites. These studies allow the identification of key pathways and molecules that are essential for parasite development, propagation and /or survival. While many aspects of our research are basic, our goal is to identify new strategies by which humans can be protected from these parasitic infections by either chemotherapeutic (drugs) or immunological (vaccines) means.
Postdoctoral and Research Assistant (BS or MS degree) applicants should have at least 3-5 years of experience and knowledge of molecular biology in a research laboratory setting, working knowledge of biochemical and biological pathways in various organisms, cell biology, tissue culture, confocal microscopy, basic immunology, and general laboratory techniques. Some experience in molecular techniques, bioinformatics and the use of experimental animal models is also required. Excellent analytical and communication skills and a drive to independently ask and test scientific hypotheses are crucial. Also, an interest in the translational aspects of these disciplines. The appointed person is expected to be productive, creative, self-motivated and with a good track record in the broader discipline of molecular, cellular and some immunological techniques, be able to work efficiently, carefully organize experiments, and work as a member of a team.

We offer a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefit package. The New York Blood Center is an Equal Opportunity Employer. The title of the position will be decided based on the qualification of the appointed person. The Lindsley F. Kimball Research Institute is a multi-disciplinary biomedical research institute with about 70 scientists in 20 independent laboratories (Lindsley F. Kimball Research Institute | New York Blood Center (nybloodcenter.org). The Institute is located within 2 blocks of Rockefeller University, Weill Cornell Medical College, and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Institute.
Interested applicants should send Curriculum vitae, statement of interest and the names, addresses and Telephone/E-mails of three references to:
