Coordinator II (Peer Leadership Institute - Child and Adolescent Health Division)

CITY OF BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED

The Peer Leadership Institute (PLI) is a peer to peer health education program that promotes healthy lifestyles amongst adolescents in the City of Boston. The mission of PLI is to protect, promote and preserve the health and well-being of the adolescents in the City of Boston. This is achieved by providing high school students with train the trainer workshops focused on sexual health, substance use, health equity, and leadership, as well as access to information and services
needed to protect and/or improve their health.

Duties:
In addition to all duties in Program Coordinator I, Program Coordinator II will perform these duties:
  • Assist in the coordination and implementation of academic year and summer programs, activities and events within the Peer Leadership Institute for youth between the ages of 15-18 including teaching, training, and developing workshops.
  • Implement best practices re: curricula, peer leadership/education and youth development and parent engagement models.
  • Assist in the design, coordination and facilitation of peer education programs, trainings, that focus on but are not limited to: sexual and reproductive health, healthy relationship promotion, substance use promotion, fitness and nutrition, health equity, program planning, facilitation, public speaking, conflict resolution, policy and advocacy, etc.
  • Work with Division programs to identify community service opportunities, outreach, educational, and field trip/recreational opportunities for peer leaders for the summer enrichment program.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of recruitment and retention strategies with schools, community-based organizations, and health providers to increase program awareness to students.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of after-school based programming at select BPS high schools.
  • Provide case management and support for youth and opportunities to enhance communication with parents and families.
  • Conduct on-going assessment and evaluation of programming.
  • Represent the program at various internal and external meetings.
  • Assist in the implementation of inclusion models to strengthen the program delivery system with an emphasis on special needs population
  • Work closely with other programs within the Child and Adolescent Health Division. Travel and occasional evenings to deliver community-based programming required.
  • Administrative functions include: progress reports, data collection, consistent database entry, precise and accurate case notes.
  • Perform other duties as required.
This job description is based on the Program Coordinator Series. May be required to perform any and all duties and responsibilities of a Coordinator II, as set forth in the BPHC Coordinator Series.

Minimum Qualifications
  • BA/BS and 2 years of equivalent experience in Public Health, Health Policy Administration, Education, or a related discipline, such as sociology, organizational psychology, public health nursing, or health communications required; OR 5 years of equivalent experience in public health program coordination, management and/or community organizing may be substituted for undergraduate degree.
  • Demonstrated experience working with young people and implementing educational programming focused on peer education and positive youth development.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations, Familiarity with Boston neighborhoods, Boston Public Schools, health and social service providers and systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with youth and coordinating peer leadership programs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of public health and social issues confronting youth including health disparities, school dropout, violence etc.
  • Ability to write clear, concise reports, and to follow and to give written and oral instructions in a precise, understandable manner.
  • Ability to supervise, including planning and assigning work; evaluating and motivating staff; determining the need for disciplinary action; and either recommending or initiating disciplinary action.
  • Ability to establish rapport with others and to maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
  • Advanced knowledge & experience with MSOffice, MSWord/Excel.
  • Advanced experience with and knowledge of local community agencies and health care providers.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability of developing timelines and meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence with diverse ethnic, cultural and socio-economic groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively.

City of Boston Residency Required, A Criminal Offenders Records Information request must be completed for this position.
