Associate Project Development Engineer

The 2-year Global Graduate development program is designed to develop critical skills by providing participants an opportunity to experience a range of placement assignments as they establish broad experience within Engineering. These carefully structured experiences will expose participants to a view of the "big picture" and capabilities in areas important to engineering. Rotations could include experiences in one Iberdrola location in Spain, Scotland, Brazil or Mexico and 2 rotations in the U.S. (Orange, CT, Rochester/Binghamton, NY and Augusta/Portland, ME).

For each assignment, participants will be required to meet specific outcomes and execute project plans. Along with rotations, members also are given opportunities to work on Process Improvement projects that relate to their rotations.
Job Description:
The Associate Project Development Engineer is responsible for various tasks related to conducting and organizing early-stage engineering scopes associated with the development of utility-scale onshore wind, solar, and energy storage projects. The Associate Project Development Engineer will work closely with the project team and Development Engineering Manager to complete preliminary engineering at pace with overall project development, contractor bidding, project investment approval, and transition to Construction Engineering. In addition to having conceptual engineering knowledge and effective communication skills, the successful candidate will be a proactive and curious learner and contribute to a positive and productive work environment.
Responsibilities:
  • Support the engineering activities and contribute to milestones under the direction of the Development Engineering Manager, who serves as the engineering technical interface with key Avangrid stakeholder teams, including Development & Origination, Environmental & Permitting, Transmission Interconnect, Capital Estimating, Scheduling, Meteorology, and Project Management, to advance development projects to investment approval.
  • Effectively coordinate internal and external engineering resources and deliverables.
  • Support preliminary transmission, substation and collection system design, as well as electrical and civil design basis and scope documentation of wind, PV, and BESS projects.
  • Attend project meetings to discuss status, action items, challenges, and risks, as needed.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders throughout project development to ensure that construction and operational requirements and lessons learned have been appropriately considered.
  • Ensure that environmental, health, and safety requirements, and cost, schedule, and performance objectives are met.
  • Assess the quality aspects of engineering, including compliance with design standards and accuracy of documentation, field analysis and reporting, and test data.
  • Support developers, permitters, engineers, development project managers, and meteorologists to ensure that project goals are implemented on schedule and within budget.
  • Support collaborative analysis, special projects, and reviews of projects, studies, and best practices.
  • Conduct engineering analysis to reach sound conclusions and recommendations relative to project performance and profitability.
  • Promote a safety awareness culture.
  • Collaborate with the project execution team as needed for smooth transition from Development to Construction.

  • Experience / Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent education; preference may be giving to candidates with relevant advanced degree(s)
  • Engineer in Training certificate and field experience preferred

  • Knowledge & Skills
  • Aptitude for agility during fluctuating development stages and strategies.
  • Conceptual understanding of various aspects of renewable energy projects.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to function well as part of a team.
  • Ability to conceptualize and prepare project plans with an appropriate awareness of impact and understanding of intended outcomes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Earth, OPC, Visio, AutoCAD, and SAP.
  • Preference may be given to candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas:
  • Substation design and engineering
  • PV design and proficiency in PVCase, PVSyst, and other PV design tools
  • Battery energy storage system development, analysis, engineering, and/or construction
  • Civil: geotechnical investigation, structural analysis, and/or road design
