Programs and Communications Associate, Summer Fund
Position Overview
Philanthropy Massachusetts is seeking an Associate to join the staff of the Summer Fund, a donor collaborative supporting summer youth enrichment programs throughout Greater Boston. The Programs and Communications Associate will be tasked with the administration of the Summer Fund’s strategic grantmaking initiatives, managing ongoing communications efforts with stakeholders, and supporting resource development work. This position reports to the Summer Fund Director and will work with other members of the Philanthropy Massachusetts staff where appropriate.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Program Administration – 40%
- Support and manage delivery and administrative aspects of the Summer Fund’s strategic grantmaking initiatives including:
- General Operating Grants – a grant program designed to support the financial demands of youth-serving nonprofits that provide subsidized programming for low-income families.
- Support the Director throughout the grantmaking process, including application design, data curation, grant recommendations, and grant reporting.
- Homeless Campership Fund – a grant program designed to place homeless youth in summer enrichment programs.
- Curate requests received through the Homeless Campership Fund
- Develop recommendations in conjunction with the Director
- Maintain relationships with partners to steward the effective use of funds
- Manage data and tracking documents for the grant program
- Mental Health Grant Program – a grant program designed to build mental health supports at summer enrichment programs.
- Support the Director throughout the grantmaking process, including application design, data curation, grant recommendations, and grant reporting.
- Support and at times manage the execution of virtual and in-person events including knowledge-sharing and networking meetings, trainings, and media events.
Communications – 40%
- Support the Director in the development, execution, and ongoing management of a strategic communications plan to inform donors, grantees, and the broader public of the Summer Fund’s work
- Manage the Summer Fund’s communications channels, including social media, email marketing, and print collateral
- Create branded content to be used across communication channels, including videos, pictures, and blog posts
- Conduct ongoing communication with grantees to elevate narratives surrounding their summer programs and funders to share these stories
- Coordinate with Philanthropy Massachusetts’ Sr. Director of Communications to support organization-wide communications efforts
Resource Development – 20%
- Support grant application processes in response to foundation RFP’s
- Conduct grant prospecting research to identify potential funding partners for the Summer Fund
- Support efforts to diversify the Summer Fund’s revenue model
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred
- Knowledge of and experience in the nonprofit sector, particularly within a youth enrichment organization
- Experience in nonprofit communications highly preferred
- Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, and ability to represent Philanthropy MA as presenter, speaker and participant in public forums, meetings and events
- Strong event planning and project management skills
- Strong organizational, analytical and time management skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Ability to manage several tasks and projects at once with excellent follow-through and ability to perform a substantial number of tasks independently
- Ability to work collaboratively, foster team spirit, approach work with an equity lens and humility, and maintain a sense of humor
- Experience in a Microsoft Office environment strongly preferred

ABOUT THE SUMMER FUND
Founded in 1971, the Summer Fund (SF) is a donor collaborative comprised of over 15 funders, which supports summer camps and programs. The Summer Fund was established by Associated Grant Makers (now Philanthropy Massachusetts) to address issues of racial, ethnic, and socio-economic disparities by recognizing the need for summer opportunities for underserved youth from low-income families, and to steward the fair and equitable distribution of resources to ensure access to those opportunities. The Summer Fund serves as a broker between the philanthropic community and nonprofit organizations providing summer programming to underserved youth. The Summer Fund provides direct operational support to selected summer camps and programs. Governed by an Advisory Committee, The Summer Fund is operated/staffed by Philanthropy Massachusetts.
EXPECTATIONS & COMPENSATION
The Programs and Communications Associate is full-time at 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday 9:00am-5:00pm. Philanthropy MA and The Summer Fund are currently operating in a hybrid work environment that includes a combination of in-person and remote work. When we operate programs in person, some programs and events may require early arrival or late departure for coverage. Annual Salary is expected to be between $45,000 and $48,000. Philanthropy Massachusetts’ office is located at 133 Federal Street, in the Financial District, near South Station and Downtown Crossing, with access to multiple options for public transportation, dining, shopping and cultural attractions.
