High Performance Computing Senior Systems Engineer II

New England Biolabs (NEB) is hiring for the role of High Performance Computing Senior Systems Engineer II. Responsibilities include working as member of NEB’s IT Infrastructure team on the administration, integration and maintenance of computing systems, clusters, as well as other systems and peripherals, including advanced filesystems, enterprise storage systems and networks. The person in this role will work with internal research and infrastructure staff to accomplish complex system integration, deployment, and administration project. system performance analyses. Success in this role will result in noticeable acceleration of NEB’s research and product development cycle.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Provide systems support for advanced research computing environment, to include the installation, integration and management of high-performance computer systems, clusters, operating systems, peripherals, and system interfaces; monitors system usage; ensures that the high-performance computing complex is operating at optimal performance and reliability levels; additional duties include consulting, training and the development and maintenance of systems documentation.
  • Manage the hardware and systems software infrastructure to provide an effective, reliable, high performance, scalable computing environment.
  • Participate in the configuration and tuning of batch queuing systems in a parallel production environment; collects parallel system utilization statistics; identifies and resolves computer system anomalies and operational problems; and provides systems support.
  • Maintain an understanding of state-of-the-art computing systems and peripherals; computer operating systems; and scalable, parallel architectures.
  • Work with users and other research professionals in evaluating application requirements, and in the configuration and deployment of computational resources.
  • Work with computer hardware and software vendors to maintain an understanding of industry trends and evolving technology.
  • Provide consulting and technical support to research community.
  • Serve as project leader on small to medium-sized projects.

Required Qualifications and Experience: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years demonstrated experience in supporting High Performance infrastructure systems technologies.
  • Must have prior Biotech experience working with scientific software applications.
  • Good working knowledge of high-performance computing systems; scalable, parallel architectures; and Linux operating system.
  • Knowledge of advanced data storage technologies and high-speed network interfaces.
  • Ability to contribute to the development of technical design decisions involving software or hardware implementation strategies.
  • Ability to monitor system usage and performance statistics and to understand the impacts of operating system tuning parameters.
  • Working knowledge and ability to use scripting languages.
  • Deep experience in the installation and configuration of operating systems and applications software.
  • Experience with network security procedures and protocols.
  • Ability to analyze requirements and determine computational resource impacts.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems, interpret operational needs, and develop integrated, creative solutions.
  • Strong verbal, written communication, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with Bioinformatics.
  • Experience with Sun Grid Engine, Conda and Singularity is a plus experience with Sun Grid Engine is a plus.
