Field Civil Engineer I

The Agency of Transportation has an exciting opportunity for an independent thinking civil engineer looking to work in the construction field as an Inspector or Chief Inspector providing oversight on highway construction projects. In this position, you will be provided the opportunity to gain the skills necessary to advance into the Resident Engineer role. If you love working in the field and want to put your engineering background to work in the beautiful rural settings of Vermont, this position could be right for you!

Construction Inspectors and Resident Engineers are exposed to a wide variety of construction projects ranging from paving, roadway, and bridge construction, to railroad work and even the occasional covered bridge restoration. While gaining valuable experience actively checking and documenting all aspects of transportation projects you will have an opportunity to collaborate with designers, contractors, state and local officials, and subject matter experts from all disciplines of engineering and construction. You will assist in the inspection of a specific project or multiple projects under the direction of a Chief Inspector or Resident Engineer. Or, based on experience, you may be assigned the Chief Inspector for the project(s). The work can be challenging and yet very rewarding with abundant opportunities for professional growth and career advancement. The official workstation is Construction Headquarters in Berlin, but you will report directly to projects when they are active. This position is regional, so even though the official workstation is Berlin there are opportunities to report elsewhere in the off-season. These include but are not limited to the regional offices in Colchester, Mendon, White River Junction, or St. Johnsbury. There is potential for telework in the off-season as well.
