RESEARCH ASSISTANT I - Health Equity Research - General Internal Medicine

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The Research Assistant I (RA) works with the Associate Chief of Division of General Internal Medicine and Primary Care overseeing equity research and strategic partnerships and the Senior Health Equity Research Manager and collaborators on projects that forward the Brigham and Women’s Hospital mission to understand causes of health inequities and best practices to promote health equity. 
The Health Equity RA will provide support in the conduct of health equity research, dissemination of research results, and community building activities that facilitate community engagement in research. The RA will conduct basic data analyses including descriptive statistics and regression analyses, conduct literature searches and literature reviews, assist in the synthesis and writing of literature reviews in areas of medicine, public health and public policy, assist in managing citations and data from literature reviews, to support ongoing health equity research. The RA will also have responsibility for assisting in quantitative and qualitative data collection and data management, and performing other duties as assigned.
 
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Assist the PI/research manager to perform basic statistical analysis of public health, epidemiologic and clinical data including variable creation, descriptive statistics and regression analysis using SAS software 
  • Assist the PI/research manager with developing/maintaining databases, running quality control checks to ensure the integrity of data, and calculating and data entry as required
  • Conducts literature searches and synthesizes literature on health disparities topics using electronic, web based, and paper sources.
  • Maintains electronic databases of medical literature and synthesizes results of existing medical research, public health, and health policy materials from literature reviews, electronic and paper sources.
  • Assist in preparation of presentation and dissemination materials, including PowerPoint slides, scientific article preparation, and policy brief preparation.
  • Gathers statistics and information on health disparities from existing resources. 
  • Assists in coordinating, tracking, and recruitment for patients eligible for participation in primary health care studies. 
  • Facilitates focus groups and community discussions to consent patients, take notes, and facilitate participant engagement and participation in research studies.
  • Attends Project Team meetings.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
 
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree, MPH, or equivalent degree preferred.
  • Experience in clinical research preferred
  • Experience with analytic software such as SAS preferred
  • Experience using internet and library search engines.
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint software preferred
  • Experience in health care settings or public health research experience preferred
 
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
  • Strong quantitative skill; ability to provide attention to detail
  • Strong investigative skills; ability to manage key word searches
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to gather information efficiently and effectively and maintain detailed records of research results
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to assimilate information and communicate with various constituents
  • Flexibility and ability to identify, analyze, and solve problems independently
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and professionalism; ability to interact with scientific and lay community members
  • Demonstrated passion and dedication to communities and improvements in community and public health
  • Spanish language ability a plus
