Research Data Manager Newborn Medicine

Functioning independently and under the general direction of the department’s Director of Research, the Research Data Manager performs high level, complex research analyses. On an interval basis, contributes to scientific literature, reports, journals and presentations and investigates, creates, and develops new methods and technologies for research analytics. The Research Data Manager should have experience in database management, data analysis, and statistical programming; may be responsible for the following activities: collecting, entering and organizing participant data; cleaning and analyzing large databases of participant data; developing and running statistical code to support research studies, generating data visualizations using statistical software including SAS, R, STATA, and SPSS; contributing to the preparation and presentation of research results in the form of oral presentation at meetings and conferences as well as in the form of publications.
The role involves (1) data management, and (2) statistical analysis expertise to use the data in (1) to both summarize (using descriptive statistics and graphical representation) and analyze using intermediate and advanced statistical methods. Ideally this would be a masters-level individual with a degree in epidemiology or biostatistics and experience managing large, and multi-generational datasets as well as in applied regression and longitudinal analytic methods. 
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintains research participant databases, including data entry, training and overseeing others to do data entry, maintaining data integrity, and conducting regular queries.
  • Contributes to the integration of research data for the department across data sources and provides assistance with clinical research studies as per study guidelines and protocols.
  • Responsible for collecting and maintaining data analysis code for study analyses, and documentation detailing analyses performed.
  • Develop new and implement existing statistical code to support data analyses. Statistical analyses will primarily be performed in SAS, STATA and R, but other software (e.g. Python) may also be used.
  • Perform independent statistical analyses, including deriving descriptive statistics to characterize specialized research cohorts. 
  • Perform regression (model interpretation, model building, and model assessment for linear regression with continuous outcomes, logistic regression with binary outcomes, and proportional hazards regression with survival time outcome) and longitudinal analyses (analysis of repeated measures, correlated outcomes and longitudinal data, including the unbalanced and incomplete data sets characteristic of biomedical research) to lead research efforts and support investigators. The analyst would be responsible for independently performing exploratory analyses.
  • Working with the PIs, biostatisticians, and other study staff, generate appropriate data visualizations to support data analyses including R, GraphPad, and other software.
  • All other duties, as assigned.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills; able to multitask and assign priorities in a busy environment.
  • Excellent English oral and written communication skills; excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required for working well with a diverse study team.
  • Strong written and verbal presentation skills.
  • General knowledge of clinical research principles.
  • Candidate MUST be highly organized and have precise attention to detail.
  • Strong database statistical skills.
  • Strong research design and analytical skills; experience and knowledge of statistical principles and statistical software. Proficiency with SAS, STATA and/or R.
  • Experience and knowledge of MS Office computer programs (Word, Excel), etc.
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism and respect for subjects’ rights.
 
 
 
  • Bachelor’s degree in science-related field plus one year’s work experience required or master’s degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, or similar field
  • Preferably 2 years of SAS and/or R programming experience
  • Understanding of the scientific method and the research lifecycle
  • 1-2 years of database management experience and/or training
  • Ability to productively interact with physicians, investigators, biostatisticians, informaticians, and research staff to accomplish project goals
  • Highly organized, with decision-making and troubleshooting skills, initiative, and the ability to work as part of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, flexibility, and ability to interact with a diverse and large research team
  • Fundamental knowledge of data management, clinical research, epidemiology, and biostatistics
