2246 - Project Officer, World Movement for Democracy (WMD)

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a federally funded, private, nonprofit grantmaking organization that works to support freedom around the world, seeks a creative and energetic, mid-career professional for the role of Project Officer for the World Movement for Democracy. This position is based in Washington, D.C.
Position Summary:
The Project Officer contributes to the development and implementation of the World Movement for Democracy, which is a global network of activists, scholars, parliamentarians, journalists, and funders who are committed to advancing democracy and human rights. The World Movement does so by connecting, informing, and empowering democracy advocates around the world.
Responsibilities: 
  • Liaise with highly accomplished human rights and democracy activists around the world to assess current trends and needs related to democracy and human rights.
  • Liaise with NED regional staff and grantees, external partners, and civil society networks to track current events and analyze international trends.
  • Contribute to the development of World Movement networks by conceptualizing new activities and outreach efforts on issues related to governance and civic participation.
  • Coordinate activities that enable cross-regional solidarity and knowledge sharing.
  • Coordinate small and large international and domestic events, including developing budgets, tracking expenditures, and drafting financial reports; leading logistical arrangements; and contributing to the development of thematic discussions.
  • Lead online discussions on issues of focus through the creation and dissemination of content.
  • Coordinate closely with NED’s Finance Department.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve the World Movement’s project management tools.
  • In coordination with NED’s Finance Department, facilitate procurement processes in accordance with NED policies and liaise with vendors and consultants.
  • Contribute to a positive and productive team culture.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Potential areas of thematic focus:
Depending on the successful candidate’s experience, skills set and interests, in addition to the World Movement’s evolving needs, the candidate may focus on the following ongoing programs, in addition to new programs as they are developed:
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge/Experience:
  • BA or BS degree preferably in political science, international affairs, or management sciences.
  • 2 + years of related experience.
  • Experience working with one or more sectors engaged in advancing democracy (civil society, independent media, civic education, human rights, youth engagement, elections, and political party building, etc.).
  • Experience leading advocacy campaigns including the strategic use of social media.
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office.
 Other Qualifications:
  • Substantial knowledge of global political developments, particularly regarding democratization.
  • Proficiency in a foreign language (French, Spanish, Russian, or Arabic);
  • Authorized to work in the United States
 Competencies:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are a must.
  • High degree of organization with strong attention to detail.
  • Energetic and creative.
