Assistant Editor, Route Fifty

The Role
Route Fifty, a GovExec publication, produces award-winning journalism through its newsletters, website and live events. We cover news, trends and emerging issues nationwide in the state and local government arena, as well as developments at the federal level that affect the nation’s states and localities. Our audience includes government leaders, decision makers and staff. 
Route Fifty is seeking an early career journalist to join our team as an Assistant Editor. In this role, you will divide your time between assisting with social media/web production and writing/reporting. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to gain reporting experience, who is interested in learning about and tracking nationally significant stories playing out in statehouses and city halls around the country. This position can accommodate permanent remote work from select states. 
Responsibilities
  • Writing short daily posts on research, surveys and brief news items, with the opportunity to write longer pieces.
  • Posting articles from partner publications on Route Fifty’s site.
  • Sharing Route Fifty stories on social media.
  • Occasionally assisting with other editorial duties (light editing, moderating panels at events, preparing newsletters).
 Qualifications
  • 0-3 years of journalistic experience as a reporter and/or editor (including internship experience and/or from extracurriculars). 
  • Interest in state and local government.
  • Strong writing and analytical skills and high attention to detail.
  • Experience managing social media accounts.
