Middle School Assistant Principal

Job Goal:
Work closely with the Middle School Principal, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, Department Directors, and MVMMS staff to design and implement the curriculum and instructional practices in the middle school classroom that are consistent with culturally sustaining practices, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), and Collaborative Problem Solving, and the mission and vision of the middle school. Work in collaboration with the Middle School Principal to create a safe, supportive, inclusive, and responsive learning environment.

Performance Responsibilities:


  • Provides leadership in the areas of technology integration, curriculum improvement, and authentic assessment/project based learning development.
  • Assumes full responsibility for the building and program in the absence of the Principal.
  • Conducts observation and evaluation of instruction and teaching under the direction of the Principal.
  • Assists in the teacher orientation program of the school system.
  • Evaluate teachers using the Educator Evaluation System under the direction of the Principal.
  • Assists the Principal in all phases of administration, supervision, and instruction programs, curriculum work, and program budgets.
  • Responsible for the supervision of janitorial services and work related to the daily maintenance and operation of the school.
  • Oversees student behavioral expectations laid out in the Student/Parent Handbook.
  • Provide targeted support to educators and support staff around practices that promote safe, equitable, restorative, and non-punitive disciplinary approaches.
  • Works as a team member to ensure that the educational program follows the school’s mission including measuring, monitoring, and evaluating the success of the program.
  • Assists in ensuring all legal and regulatory documents are filed.
  • Uses data, with an inclusive and equitable lens, to improve the teaching and learning of all staff and students.
  • Assumes responsibility under the direction of the Principal for making all supervisory schedule assignments, cafeteria supervision, study hall supervision and corridor supervision.
  • Maintains high visibility within the school and communicates closely with students regarding their behavior and performance. Assumes responsibility for administration and supervision of all related student activities.
  • Assists the middle school principal in the management and supervision of all employees in the middle school.
  • Assist in the scheduling of staff and students as needed in order to meet the learning needs of all in our school community.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws, including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.




Essential Functions of the Job:
Must possess the ability to:

  • Apply knowledge of Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, current state standards and expectations, best and differentiated instructional strategies, and common assessment practices.
  • Provide instructional and organizational leadership for the school.
  • Promote an effective learning climate in the school.
  • Support the school in adapting to the changing educational environment and implementing program improvements.
  • Maintain a safe and respectful environment, proper student conduct and student discipline.
  • Effectively problem-solve and make difficult decisions based upon the best interests of students.
  • Communicate and support the developmental needs of adolescent learners.
  • Build effective relationships with students, staff, parents and community members.
  • Performs all tasks as the Principal deems necessary to carry out the duties and responsibilities listed above.

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups including staff, parents, and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and policies. Ability to use technology effectively for administration, management, and communication.

Physical and Environmental Demands:
The physical and environmental demands described here are representatives of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Ability to work in a normal classroom and school building environment.
  • Ability to move freely about the building to perform duties with students and teachers.

  • Qualifications:
  • A Master’s Degree in the appropriate discipline or in educational administration.
  • A valid Massachusetts license as Principal/Assistant Principal (6-8, Pre K-8, or 5-12).
  • At least five years’ experience in teaching, supervision, and school administration.
  • Demonstrated skills in instruction, management, planning, decision-making, and interpersonal and community relations.
  • Experience and training in working with adolescents.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (C.O.R.I.)
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

  • Melrose Middle School Principal

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience preferred
  • Master degree preferred
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required
