Moderate Special Education Elementary Teacher

Title: Anticipated Moderate Special Education Elementary Teacher

Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree preferred
  • Masters in Elementary Education with a degree in Moderate or Sever Special needs.
  • Teaching experience preferred
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Background Check ( C.O.R.I.) and fingerprinting check
  • SEI endorsement
Reports To: Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services and/or Elementary School Principal

Job Goal To provide all special education teacher responsibilities, including assessments and all appropriate planning, instruction, and assessment for students with significant cognitive and physical disabilities enrolled in the district; To work collaboratively with parents/guardians and colleagues to meet the developmental, academic, social/emotional, and behavioral needs of students with disabilities.

Job Description This position is in an established program designed to meet the needs of students with significant developmental delays including Autism, Down Syndrome, and other neuro-diverse profiles. The successful candidate will join a well-established team, including a BCBA, special ed teachers, SLPs, OT, PT, and paraprofessionals. In keeping with the Melrose philosophy, this program promotes strong inclusion opportunities based on engaging partnerships between the general education teachers and special educators.

Performance Responsibilities:
Instruction:
  • Develop and implement schedules for students' services in accordance with their IEPs' service delivery.
  • Select appropriate instructional programs and methodologies, plan, and implement instruction that matches students' IEP goals and objectives.
  • Implement IEP goals.
  • Employ appropriate behavior management techniques during individual or small group instruction.
  • Maintain and use adaptive equipment and material.
  • Develop and implement classroom and curricular accommodations and modifications.
  • Teach and plan cooperatively with subject area teachers.
  • Supplement major subject area programs on an individual and small group basis.
Assessment:
  • Assess the progress of all students on caseload and differentiate student goals and instruction accordingly
  • Maintain assessment materials for special education evaluations.
  • Administer MCAS with accommodations or develop portfolio/s for MCAS alternate assessment, as outlined in student/s' IEP
  • Write reports based on evaluations and present reports at Team eligibility determination meetings.
  • Individually test students and complete necessary assessment components for Special Education evaluations and reevaluations.
  • Participate in annual Kindergarten Screening and preschool screenings when needed.
Liaison Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a Special Education liaison, which includes parent/guardian contact, scheduling of meetings, and completion of necessary paperwork for evaluations and Team meetings.
  • Participate in Team evaluation and review meetings for students on caseload.
  • Write Individualized Education Programs (IEP's).
  • Complete progress reports for all students, according to the schedule set by school and special education regulations.
  • Coordinate progress reports from all service providers.
Paraprofessionals:
  • Consult with special education paraprofessionals; including planning, coaching, modeling.
  • Provide supervision of assigned special education paraprofessionals.
  • Provide feedback and input regarding paraprofessionals to building Principal.
Communication/Consultation:
  • Consult with parents/guardians, classroom teachers, related service providers, school nurse, and paraprofessionals, regarding planning and students' program needs.
  • Consult with classroom teachers and special education paraprofessionals regarding accommodations and modifications.
  • Conduct parent/guardian-teacher conferences during conference periods identified on school calendar.
  • Communicate frequently with parents/guardians of students of caseload (e.g.email, telephone, etc.)
  • Participate in school Open House for parent/guardians according to schedule set each year.
Miscellaneous:
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to increase knowledge base and skills, as well as maintain licensure.
  • Attend and participate in department meetings.
  • Maintain the high level of confidentiality and professionalism expected of all staff.
  • Perform other related tasks or duties at the discretion of Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services and/or the building Principal.
Essential Functions of the Job:
Must possess the ability to:
  • Building positive relationships with students n support of their academic and social-emotional development.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of IEP goals and establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and teh like to communicate these objectives to students.
  • Employ instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives
  • Be willing to engage in ongoing education regarding low incident disabilities and required modifications and accommodations needed.

  • Plan a program of study that, to the extent possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Apply knowledge of instructional strategies, including adaptive technology, compensatory skills, and curriculum to foster the academic and social/emotional development of each student according to the student's capacity for growth.
  • Address and plan for students' physical and mobility issues with support of physical therapist.
  • Address and plan for skill development in students' daily living skills.

Job Requirements

  • Associates Degree with experience or classes in elementary/early childhood classes or work experience helpful. BCBA training or experience helpful.

  • Severe Special Needs Certification with elementary experience. Experience in SEL, school culture/climate, behavior strategies and PBIS is a bonus.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required
