331008 Senior Scientist, Cell Biologist

We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist to work on new treatments to address the threat of infectious diseases by joining our growing Infectious Diseases Research Unit (ID RU) at Upper Providence, PA.  The ID RU is one of the Research Units in the R&D organization at GSK and is responsible for the discovery of novel approaches & targets to treat infectious diseases that threaten our health and progressing them to clinical proof of concept studies.  The Research Unit has an impactful portfolio of projects in hepatitis B, bacterial infections, and viral respiratory infections (including COVID-19) along with collaborations with Vir Biotechnology and 23&Me.  
The successful candidate within the Infectious Diseases Research Unit (IDRU) will be responsible for conducting in vitro experiments to progress drug discovery projects targeting the immune system for inducing/enhancing anti-viral immune responses.  Areas of focus include in vitro cell based immunological assays using primary human and mouse immune cells and various immune cell lines, and experiments using immunology and molecular biology techniques.  In addition, the successful candidate may be expected to contribute to the establishment and characterization of target validation studies and mechanistic elucidation of target biology.

  • Coordinates with Program Leaders/scientists to plan and execute experiments
  • Works collaboratively on aspects of experiments to be performed by other members of the team
  • Contributes to driving the scientific direction
  • Interprets results and designs next logical step of experiments based on interpretation of results
  • Performs complex data management tasks with minimal supervision
  • Prepares detailed oral or written summaries of results with interpretation for projects/programs; independently writes specific technical sections of internal and external reports
  • Assumes responsibility for posting data, tracking usage of reagents, maintaining updated electronic lab notebook records
  • Assists in publishing, patenting, or presenting data as needed
  • Assists in general operation of the biology lab facility


Why you?

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • BS with 3-6+ yrs experience with a background in immunology and cell and molecular biology.
  • Experience handling and manipulating primary human and mouse cells and cell lines
  • Experience with immunology and molecular biology techniques and assays (e.g. flow cytometry, ELISA, ELISpot, qRT-PCR, transfection, Immune cell functional and co-culture assays).
  • Experience with data handling software (e.g. Spotfire, GraphPad, Excel, FlowJo and/or other flow analysis software).


Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • MS degree (1-3+ yrs experience) with a background in immunology and >2 years’ experience in pharmaceutical industry or biotech.
  • Experience in designing and running multiparametric flow cytometry (ten or more color) experiments and analyzing relevant data and experience with spectral flow cytometers.
  •  Experience in in vitro work with viral infection.
  •  Experience developing/utilizing complex in vitro immune cell assays.
  • Strong work ethic with desire to carry out independent hypothesis generation and testing.
  • Highly motivated self-starter, with excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work effectively individually and in team and matrix environments.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
