Senior Science Writer/Editor

We are excited to recruit a Senior Science Writer/Editor reporting to our Senior Director, Editorial in MSK's Marketing and Communications Department. As a principal liaison with executive leadership at the Sloan Kettering Institute, you will collaborate closely with scientists to develop a communications strategy to enhance SKI’s reputation as a world-renowned research institution committed to the basic and translational science that leads to breakthrough cancer treatments. You will initiate, implement and supervise projects to educate readers about the ongoing research at SKI and elsewhere at MSK for audiences including, researchers, potential recruits, donors and journalists. This is a critical and strategic role where you will take the lead in making recommendations about scientific research to highlight through our marketing channels.

You will:
- Write and edit communications and publications for MSK on research and institutional topics
- Meet and interview scientific researchers for reports and articles that may appear in a variety of channels -- including our flagship magazine MSK News, award-winning Annual Report and MSKCC.org
- Review research studies and make coverage recommendations
- Act as project facilitator and manager for designated initiatives
- Interact with scientific leadership and take primary responsibility for complex, multi-faceted projects/articles that require extensive preparation and editorial review
- See projects through all editorial changes and approvals
- Provide editorial support and guidance to freelancers, internal stakeholders, and other staff writers
- Suggest and execute strategic marketing/editorial goals for SKI
- Prepare quarterly reports on M&C’s integrated efforts to promote SKI
You have:
- 6+ years of experience in science writing or science journalism
- Proven expertise in writing about biology, health, medicine, and complex cancer-related topics for lay audiences
- Strong proficiency and understanding of web content, keywords, and other digital best practices
- Excellent communication and storytelling abilities to engage and excite audiences
- A track record of collaborating and developing strong relationships with senior leaders and colleagues
- An understanding of industry trends
- Enthusiasm and genuine interest in MSK's mission
