Position Summary
 
Reporting to the Senior Director, Insights and Analytics, the Data Engineer is a member of the Data Science team within Insights and Analytics (I&A). Data Science provides data/statistical analysis, business intelligence and data visualization products, data assets, ad hoc queries, and training primarily in support of the development strategies of the Office of Alumni and Development (OAD). The Data Engineer works closely with colleagues in I&A and other areas of the organization to develop underlying data models, structures, and tools to enable effective analyses and decision making across the Alumni and Development community.
 
Responsibilities
 
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
 
  • Design, enhance, and maintain high-quality data architectures that align with I&A and OAD business requirements and improve data reliability, efficiency, and quality. Utilize advanced database query and scripting languages (such as PL/SQL or R/Python) to create and maintain Data Science tools and resources.
  • Identify opportunities for data acquisition and ETL to develop a more comprehensive understanding of constituents along an array of useful attributes.
  • Develop, deploy, and continuously improve constituent behavioral models, machine learning, predictive modeling algorithms, and standard metrics.
  • Partner with I&A colleagues to develop data models used in business intelligence content in support of broader strategic priorities within OAD via available reporting and analytics platforms.
  • Maintain proficiency in industry standard and emerging ETL and data acquisition methods, useful data sources, analytical techniques, technology, and software tools through self-guided learning, coursework, conference attendance, etc.
  • Ad hoc project assistance, as required.
 
Minimum Qualifications
 
Bachelor’s degree required. Substantial coursework in Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, Economics, Applied Analytics, or a related discipline strongly preferred. Four (4) to Six (6) years of work experience is required, with a minimum of two (2) years of work related to data analysis. Demonstrated proficiency in SQL is required. Experience in R or Python is required. Experience with business intelligence and data visualization platforms (Microsoft Power BI, SSRS, Tableau, Qlik) is a plus. Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite (advanced Excel or Google Sheets) and other common computer applications required. Excellent oral and interpersonal skills and strong project management and problem-solving skills. This position requires strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information. Strong customer service skills and an exemplary attitude are required.
 
Preferred Qualifications
 
Knowledge of common practices in the fields of alumni relations and development preferred. Ability to conceptualize and develop proactive approaches to support organizational goals, including data mining, sophisticated constituent database queries, etc. preferred.

Subject to business needs, the Office of Alumni and Development supports remote and hybrid work arrangements for this position. Options will be discussed during the interview process.
