Position Details
Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. SIPP in partnership with the Groundwork Jacksonville is hiring an intern to build resiliency in North Riverside through the continuation of the Community Restoration Environmental Stewardship Training (CREST) program.

Community Restoration Environmental Stewardship Training (CREST) program is a result of Groundwork Jacksonville (GWJax) community engagement efforts in the neighborhoods surrounding McCoys Creek. CREST is an intergenerational program that will establish the foundation for attitudinal and behavioral changes regarding nature among community members. It will be offered to seniors, adults and 11-18 year-olds who live in McCoys Creek neighborhoods - Hollybrook, North Riverside and Brooklyn. Adults will mentor the youth by sharing their community history and working together to increase their environmental knowledge. This community-owned project embraces our core principle of do “with” rather than do “for.” GWJax will recruit, train, and cultivate community leaders to become stewards of their community. CREST will create an opportunity for cultural change regarding the protection and conservation of community green spaces, by stewards (1) actively engaging their neighbors in caring about the environment; (2) embracing their roles as mentors and leaders; and (3) learning to actively love and appreciate nature. Stewards will show pride in their community and teach others to connect with the environment. The intergenerational relationships within the group will be based on respect, responsibility, reciprocity, and resiliency.

Member Duties : VISTA will build resiliency in North Riverside through the continuation of the Community Restoration Environmental Stewardship Training (CREST) program through the following activities: Develop environmental education programming, job skills training curriculum, and opportunities to help uplift residents of North Riverside out of poverty. Be active in grant research and writing to ensure there is sustained funding for the CREST program. Engage CREST members and encourage consistent participation by building rapport and maintaining consistent contact with program members and their families. Perform community outreach in their community related to environmental stewardship, training opportunities, and community education.
