Editorial Content Manager

CSHL is seeking an Editorial Content Manager that will be responsible for a team of content developers and freelance writers. They will guide content development, ensuring that the required content goals and production schedules are met. This individual will ensure content accuracy; readability/ /accessibility for targeted audiences, enforce branding and CSHL style; edit and proofread content for all CSHL communications products. The Editorial Content Manager will work with the management team to support our multimedia first digital publishing platform. They will work to advance the department’s mission of raising public awareness about the Laboratory’s world-renowned research and educational programs.

Editorial Perform all duties associated with an editorial content manager; including editing, fact-checking, reviewing for CSHL style and branding needs, and assisting with multimedia product development Assist in identifying and managing opportunities to position CSHL in prominent media outlets; assist with media inquiries and pitching strategies. Assist in the development and maintenance of content for the CSHL external website. Contribute to print and electronic materials produced by CSHL departments as needed. 

Managerial Responsibilities Lead and mentor a small group of content developers, including freelancers. Drive content development by mapping an annual content plan and an editorial calendar to provide direction for the department. Serve in an Editorial Board leadership role within the department to evaluate the content and help set editorial direction for product development. Assist in the development of multimedia products for digital platforms to tell compelling stories to general audiences about CSHL in any/all formats, including podcasts and other web-based content. 

Additional Responsibilities Keep current with the scientific output of the Laboratory and cultivate relationships with faculty, division, and department leadership (e.g., by attending in-house seminars and events) and reading papers published by CSHL investigators. Set priorities when handling multiple projects, communicate clearly and proactively with other team members. Ability to work under tight deadlines. Ability to articulate complex ideas into simple, relatable terms.
Position RequirementsEducation: Bachelor’s degree in Communications or Journalism required. Master’s degree is a plus. 
Experience: 5-7 years of experience in a role with editorial experience
Other requirements: 

  • Experience with electronic and print media
  • Website content experience
  • Familiarity with SEO guidelines and keyword research tools
  • Ability to comprehend complex scientific material and assist in language translation
