F220079 - Clinical Lecturer - School of Law

Position Summary:
The University at Buffalo School of Law invites applications for a Staff Attorney position with the Clinical Legal Education Program, to commence as soon as possible (as early as July 2022). The successful candidate will serve as a staff attorney alongside law school faculty members. This position offers an attorney the opportunity to engage in access to justice work, supporting those who would otherwise be without legal representation.
The Staff Attorney will have primary responsibility for supporting the docket and projects within the Criminal Justice Advocacy Clinic, the Community Engagement Clinic, and other clinics as needed. The successful candidate will have the ability to assist with shaping the docket(s) and other legal reform projects, in coordination with the individual clinics’ directors.
The Staff Attorney’s duties will include:
  • Supervising the work of second- and third-year law students’ on individual client matters;
  • Assisting with the planning and facilitating clinic seminar classes;
  • Conducting outreach in Western New York and surrounding regions in order to build the clinic’s docket;
  • Drafting and reviewing pleadings, motions, and court submissions, and support the filing of documents; and
  • Case coverage during the summer and inter-semester breaks, with assistance from law students.

This is a part-time state position with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2022. The Staff Attorney will receive benefits (including excellent health insurance) and a budget of $2,000 for professional development and travel. This position may also include opportunities to increase FTE (Full Time Equivalency) by assisting with securing funds through grants through the Research Foundation.

The Staff Attorney will be integrated into the Clinical Legal Education program and will be welcome to participate in the vibrant intellectual life of the School of Law, including workshops, academic conferences, and other events. The Staff Attorney will be joining a clinical program whose mission is to deliver access to justice while teaching UB law students to be excellent, ethical, and engaged lawyers. Minimum Qualifications:
  • The Staff Attorney must be a member of the New York Bar (currently licensed in New York) or be eligible to be admitted on motion, without examination, (see Judiciary Law § 90 [i][b]; 22 NYCRR 520.10) in order to independently supervise law practice by students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of legal practice experience.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills essential.
  • Seeking those who possess a willingness and desire to work with incarcerated clients with experience working in criminal defense.
  • The ideal candidate will have an interest in and aptitude for supervision, a demonstrated commitment to public interest or pro bono legal work; and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
