Data Analyst Fellowship

Position Title: Data Analyst Fellowship
Position Information: Part-time/Full-time
Temporary Travel: Quarterly in-person, one-day team meetings.
Compensation: $45,000
Location: Washington, D.C. (Telework for all staff.)
Reports To: Health Data and Research Associate

About the Institute for Medicaid Innovation

The Institute for Medicaid Innovation (IMI) is a national 501(c)3 nonprofit, research, and policy organization that provides independent, nonpartisan information and analysis to inform Medicaid policy and improve the health of the nation. Working closely with the research team, the Data Analyst Fellowship will provide an opportunity for the analyst to operationalize their skills, thought leadership, data management, data analysis, and presentation of data through multiple formats to continue to build and strengthen the data analytic capacity of IMI. Topics for data analysis may include women and gender health, child and adolescent health, behavioral health, health disparities, health inequities, structural racism, health system and payment reform, value-based purchasing and alternative payment models, social determinants of health, and other salient Medicaid topics. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Synthesize data from multiple sources including large, federal datasets to generate key reports, tables, and maps.
  • Respond to incoming requests, inquiries, and other correspondence related to data analysis.
  • Support investigators and project directors in their efforts to lead the execution and completion of project reports, including:
  • Draft the design and methods for conducting the analysis in response to the research question and specific aims.
  • Develop outlines, draft text, and summarize project results for reports, policy issue briefs, manuscripts, and presentations.
  • Draft, edit, and coordinate internal and external review of project deliverables (e.g., questionnaires, reports, benchmark reports, etc.).
  • Upon request, prepare reports related to various projects, meetings, and presentations.
  • Contribute to the develop of abstracts submitted to conferences.
  • Identify opportunities to analyze quantitative data utilizing existing and new databases relevant to Medicaid research and policy.
  • Conduct statistical analyses to support projects and present findings in digestible, visually appealing ways appropriate for different types of audiences.
  • Assist with managing a longitudinal database, including maintaining documentation of changes to the data collection instrument during instrument refinement. Establish and maintain a data dictionary for all analyses.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The fellow must have a strong data analysis, communications, and public health background. Experience with database creation and with data entry, cleaning, and analysis of large data sets is required. The fellow must have proficiency in statistical software (SAS, Stata, SPSS, R), Microsoft Excel and the Office suite, excellent oral and written communication skills, with geographical mapping or data visualization skills a plus. Excellent organization and time management skills with demonstrated project management skills are necessary. To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must be currently enrolled in and near completion of a masters or doctoral program in a relevant field such as public health, public policy, mathematics and statistics, computer, information, or data sciences, health and medical sciences, or a health-related research field (e.g., with an interest in analyzing, designing, and managing health data and systems to improve healthcare and population health).

  • Ability to maintain daily workflow while balancing multiple tasks.

  • Acute attention to detail and strong work ethic.
  • Flexibility and ability to consistently meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with federal and state Medicaid policy.
