Editorial Assistant, Workman Kids

Workman Kids (WK) is seeking an editorial assistant who is passionate about children’s book publishing. The Editorial Assistant will provide administrative and editorial support to the Publisher of Workman Kids and Algonquin Young Readers as well as the Executive Editor of Novelty, Activity and Gift.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Prepare materials for and traffic editorial projects through all stages of the editorial process from acquisition through final book.
  • Interact professionally with authors and literary agents, as well as internal departments within WK, AYR and HBG, including design, publicity, marketing, production, sales. 
  • Enter title data into proprietary database systems and maintain data throughout publishing process.
  • Draft and circulate contract forms.
  • Draft descriptive copy and fact sheets that will be used to introduce books to the sales and marketing departments.
  • Prepare materials for meetings, as required.
  • Read, report on, log in, track, and respond to submissions of manuscripts
  • Research book sales using internal and external databases.
  • Perform administrative duties, including: scheduling, handling mail, preparing packages for shipment, directing/responding to inquiries, filing expense reports, misc. research projects, etc.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Demonstrated interest in children’s literature is essential
  • Excellent administrative skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.
  • Highly organized, capable of multi-tasking, and detail oriented.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively while also ensure quality of work through attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively with colleagues at every level of seniority.
  • Self-directed and able to work independently to achieve goals.
  • Proven ability to deliver timely, accurate work and demonstrate good follow-up and follow-through.
  • Comfortable using email, calendar management, and file management tools.
  • Familiar with Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel or other like tools.
  • Enthusiastic about the creative process and sharing ideas.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • No publishing experience required but 1 year preferred (internships ok).
