Research Assistant (Clinical, Behavioral & Outcomes Research) (R3603-22)

Under direct supervision, the Research Assistant will be involved in a study to investigate the basic mechanisms of skeletal muscle signaling and metabolism as related to diabetes, with a major focus on the study of exercise and muscle contraction. Specifically, this individual will assist with utilizing a wide variety of research methods and procedures designed to study how exercise activates signaling proteins, which then regulate various cellular functions including metabolism, protein synthesis, and gene transcription in skeletal muscle.

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance of mouse colony; animal husbandry and handling
  • Perform metabolic, diet, and exercise training studies on mice
  • Complete analysis of samples collected from human participants, rodents, and cell lines.
  • Perform biochemical assays, including Western blotting and PCR
  • Maintain general laboratory equipment and inventory.
  • Accurate record-keeping and data storage
  • Ensure safe laboratory practices and compliance with institutional research guidelines
  • Attend laboratory safety meetings, ensure safe laboratory practices and compliance with institutional research guidelines
  • Keep up with appropriate literature and research publications
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • B.S. in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biological Sciences or Molecular Biology
  • Minimum 1 year of demonstrated practical experience with relevant laboratory methods preferred
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Intermediate analytical, critical thinking, and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills: to interact with other employees, professional staff and/or external contacts
  • Must be detail oriented, with the ability to prioritize responsibilities – through completion
  • Ability to work independently and with others in the lab
  • Hands-on experience with animal husbandry and/or ability to work with small animals
