Special Education Life Skills Teacher
 
The position of a Special Education Life Skills Teacher will be available at East Central ISD for the 2022-2023 school year. All individuals (district employees included) who are interested in this position must apply online through Frontline via the district website. The deadline for submitting an application is 4:00 pm., June 25, 2022, or until the position is filled.  
 
POSITION FUNCTION/PURPOSE:  Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to address the intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth as outlined in their IEP. Instruct students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society. Assist and support building principals to ensure on-site administration and execution of the district’s educational programs, policies, and regulations and quality instruction for all students in a safe and healthy environment. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  1. Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop IEP through the ARD committee process for each student assigned.
  2. Help manage the behavior of assigned student(s). This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining students exhibiting dangerous behavior, as appropriate and consistent with restraint criteria.
  3. Implement an instructional, functional, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required. 
  4. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect an understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  5. Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curriculum as needed and assist special education students in general ed classes with assignments.
  6. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned.
  7. Participate in ARD Committee meetings on a regular basis.
  8. Conduct assessments of student learning styles and use results to plan for instructional activities. 
  9. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by IEP.

  11. Plan and supervise assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer (s).
  12. Use technology in the teaching/learning process, including assistive technology in accordance w/the IEP.
  13. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  14. Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, feeding, and toileting of students as stated in IEP.
  15. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  16. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  17. Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  18. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  19. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  20. Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  21. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  22. Perform other duties as assigned.
  23. Maintain confidentiality consistent with federal, state and local requirements.
  24. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate Special Education EC-12
[Physical Education Teachers: Current automated external defibrillator (AED) certificate]
 
EQUIPMENT USED: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; other specialized and adaptive equipment used by students. 

WORKING CONDITIONS:   Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours. Frequent standing, stooping, walking, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Work inside may work outside; regular exposure to noise. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment. Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); occasional heavy lifting 45 pounds or over) and positioning for students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint, and assist non-ambulatory students. Exposure to biological hazards.

SALARY: Based on the 2022-2023 Classroom Teacher Salary scale
