Job Purpose
Directs, coordinates, and executes all technical needs and production requirements of the Sottile Theatre’s 75 – 125 annual performances including concerts, musical theatre, dance, and opera productions, as well as lectures, seminars and films. Maintains and safeguards the technical assets of the Theatre including the use of lighting, sound, rigging, and technology components of performances and events. Provides feedback and technical advice to Theatre management and production support to users of the Theatre including professional touring companies, local, regional, and on campus groups. Serves as project coordinator for all technical upgrades and ensures proper upkeep, functionality, and growth of the Theatre.
Minimum Requirements
High School diploma and a minimum of four years directly related experience or additional education in technical theatre, stage lighting, rigging, or other related area. Strong supervisory experience, communication skills and a Bachelor’s degree in design or technical theater preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of theatrical equipment, including but not limited to rigging, lighting, and sound systems. Should possess a sufficient understanding of the principles of sound amplification, mixing and balancing, and/or the principles of lighting design and its implementation, for live events. Must have knowledge of best practices and OSHA regulations relating to technical theater production.
Additional Comments Regarding Position
Should be physically able to lift 50 lbs unassisted and access lighting positions via attic space to adjust and maintain them. This position works a flexible schedule, with regular office hours, plus evening and weekend hours required. Extensive overtime is frequently required, particularly during the Spoleto Festival in May and June.

1) Coordinates and oversees all technical aspects of 50+ annual productions. Acts as the College’s representative and advises clients and artists regarding the technical requirements, policies, and resources of the facility, including handling the “tech advance” of every performance in an efficient and timely manner. Manages all technical aspects of a production from load-in to load-out including staffing and supervision of stage crew. Secures relationships with both external and internal clients by providing exceptional service at all artistic levels in order to maintain and build strong community and institutional partnerships.

2) Develops and implements maintenance plan for the facility and equipment. Coordinates and oversees preventative and emergency maintenance and repairs of all technical systems and equipment. Makes recommendations to management for repair and replacement of high value equipment and theatrical systems. Initiates and coordinates the procurement of technical supplies, tools and equipment necessary to operate and maintain the facility.

3) Responsible for the day-to-day management of all technical aspects of the Sottile Theatre; hiring, training, and supervising all personnel including sound/lighting technicians, riggers and stagehands to ensure the Theatre is properly staffed year-round. Fosters and improves the student campus experience by hiring student workers. Supervises and evaluates one full time Assistant Technical Director position. Ensures that staff and users of the Theatre employ safe operating practices at all times. Acts as steward for the facility during annual Spoleto Festival, ensuring the well-being of the facility.

4) Determines personnel and equipment requirements for performances and events including cost estimates to fulfill these requirements. Provides and maintains technical specifications including stage plans, lighting plots, and line-set schedules, and other venue-specific documents for distribution to clients. Provides recommendations and financials to support necessary or suggested upgrades and repairs; works with management on procurement.

5) Provides management with data on use of the Theatre, as well as comparable information from other venues as needed. Ensures that all necessary paperwork is kept up-to-date and submitted on time, including show staffing logs, staff paperwork and timesheets, purchasing documents, mandatory training, etc. Performs special projects and completes reports/studies in support of institutional and divisional missions and objectives.
