Opportunity Title: Legal Public Policy Intern

Department: David Rothenberg Center for Public Policy (DRCPP) / Policy Counsel
Location: In-Person (Long Island City)
Tentative Schedule: 10 hours per week commitment (sometime Mon-Fri 9am-5pm)
Duration: Fall (Sept 1-Dec 15); Spring (Feb 1-May 15); Summer (June 1-Aug 15)

Position Summary: The role of the Legal Policy Intern within the David Rothenberg Center for Public Policy (DCRPP) will be to support our advocacy efforts around ending mass incarceration, addressing conditions of confinement, and supporting successful re-entry.
Tasks / Primary Responsibilities
§ Research and analysis that supports development of advocacy strategies and policy work.
§ Legal and non-legal research and writing.
§ Support existing advocacy activities as well as contributing ideas for future legislation/policies.
§ Open to attend rallies supported by The Fortune Society.
§ Review legal inquiries from Fortune participants to access in-house help and/or research possible external referrals.
Learning Objectives
§ Develop a legal writing sample by the conclusion of the internship.
§ Develop familiarity with legislative advocacy processes and strategies.
§ Gain experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders in criminal legal system reform efforts.
Preferred Qualifications:
§ Strong preference for 2L Law Students.
§ Proven application of research in legal or public policy matters preferred.
§ Must have an interest and appreciation for the challenges faced by people who have criminal justice involvement, including collateral consequences that last well beyond time spent in prison or jail.
§ Proficient in using Google Suite and Excel;

§ Must be 18+ of age
§ Must have personal laptop/computer with a reliable internet connection
§ Must show proof of completed COVID-19 vaccination (boosters not required to comply with EO47).
