East Asia Analyst

Overview

We are looking for Analysts with experience and interest in conducting data-driven investigations on East Asian security issues to join our State-Sponsored Threats Program. Our team at C4ADS is pioneering new approaches in using publicly available information and emerging technology to map, track, and disrupt state-sponsored illicit activities, such as proliferation financing and malign influence. As an Analyst, you’ll play a driving role in this effort. You will build and field new tech and methodologies to uncover the techniques and networks that states use to exploit systems of international collaboration, threaten global security, and undermine democratic institutions. You will steer the strategy and impact of our projects, develop new lines of inquiry, and work with a diverse coalition of government and civil society partners to hold these networks accountable. Organization:

C4ADS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to data-driven analysis and evidence-based reporting of conflict and security issues worldwide. We utilize cutting-edge technologies to manage, integrate, and analyze disparate data from diverse languages, regions, and sources, including our own field research in conflict zones and fragile states. Through our data collection and analysis, we seek to produce and disseminate compelling content to engage both international and local audiences on issues of conflict and security. In doing so, we fill a critical gap left by traditional public sector institutions and profit-driven contractors.

What You’ll Do:

  • Learn and apply advanced data science and investigative methods to conduct detailed analysis of transnational illicit networks
  • Use native or professional-level proficiency in Chinese or other foreign languages to find, collect, and analyze high value datasets for related projects
  • Produce a range of analytical products from public reports to private dossiers for a wide audience, including law enforcement, regulatory agencies, and multinational organizations
  • Travel around the world to meet with partners and collaborate
  • Represent C4ADS by briefing analysis externally, including to senior decision-makers, and at high-level public forums
  • Regularly use advanced technologies like Palantir to support research and analysis

What We’re Looking For:

  • Native or professional-level fluency in Chinese OR demonstrated knowledge of data and analytical tools for geospatial/maritime analysis
  • Proven investigative experience related to the maritime sector, financial crime, state-sponsored malign influence and counterintelligence, cyber threat analysis, money laundering, conflict finance, or sanctions evasion
  • Prior overseas work and/or relevant research experience in using non-English sources to conduct analysis on illicit networks
  • Experience in using technology to analyze structured and unstructured data
  • Undergraduate degree in a related field, be it international relations, computer science, foreign language, or a similar area
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills

  • Willingness to travel at short notice, including to high-risk environments

Bonus Points For:


  • Experience in big data analysis / data engineering / cloud computing
  • Advanced proficiency or fluency in additional East Asian languages
  • Master’s degree in a related field
