Youth Legislature Advisor

Location:
Youth Legislature Advocates will be based at our downtown Seattle headquarters located at: 909 4th Ave, Seattle, WA 98104
 
Travel:
Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.

  • Serving in a full-time AmeriCorps position qualifies as "employment" towards the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program

Compensation for this role is $2,066.86/monthly

Responsibilities


What you'll be doing:

  1. Facilitate the creation of a strong team within your delegation. Work with your delegation to develop a healthy group identity based on their shared experience and interests.
  2.  Facilitate leadership opportunities within the delegation that provide development of students' skills and set them up for success.
  3. Communicate with parents to ensure they have comprehensive information about program, including fees, schedule.
  4. Meet program deadlines. Each year a Statewide Program Calendar is published for the upcoming year’s activities. It is important for your delegation that submit all required registration materials, forms, and fees into the State Office by these deadlines.
  5. Act as a resource base. Know your parliamentary procedure and the YMCA Rules of Order (in your Advisor Handbook). Be able to help students in the use of the RCWs (Revised Code of Washington) and help students identify other sources of information and knowledge. 
  6. Ensure full accountability to the delegation budget and local program calendar, including due dates for delegation fees and other materials.
  7. Attend staff meetings and trainings as required. Participate in shared leadership responsibility for conducting district training events.
  8. Communicate with YAG District Coordinator and State Office, Interim YGS YAG Leader, and other YGS advisors. Arrange to have another advisor be ready to support in case of an absence.
  9. Assume program area responsibilities during the State-Wide YMCA Youth Legislative session in addition to supervising and transporting your delegates.
  10. Understands all program offerings, pricing, policies and procedures, and is a proficient user of Zoom, REGY, Discord, and other assigned systems.
  11. Other duties as assigned.
 
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.

Qualifications


What we're looking for in an applicant:

  1. 21 years of age or older
  2. Six months or more of relevant work experience (community outreach, public relations, leadership roles, etc) preferred.
  3. Experience and success in communicating with teens
  4. Ability to prioritize and respond to multiple questions via phone, email and in person.
  5. Strong computer skills and experience working with Zoom.
  6. Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  7. Current state approved first aid certification.*
  8. Current state approved CPR and AED certification.**
  9. Other applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position will be considered.
  10. * Necessity and timing determined by branch.
  11. **Within 60 days of employment or first available training.

Preferred Experiences
  1. Knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse population (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation etc).
  2. Ability to speak any language in addition to English.

Requirements
This position may require driving:

  1. 21 years of age or older.
  2. Current Driver’s License with a minimum 3 years safe driving experience and a driving record which meets or exceeds YMCA standards
  3. Other applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position will be considered.
  4. Maximum one minor violation
  5. No speeding violation of more than 20mph over the limit

Eligibility: Applicants must be at least 21 years old and have a High school diploma/GED.
