The Central Transportation Planning Staff (CTPS) of the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) seeks a data analyst. This individual will join the newly formed Data Analysis and Applications team. This is a rare opportunity to help shape a growing team of transportation data analysts in service of the Boston region. Our team is passionate about using emerging data sources and analysis tools to advance transportation planning efforts. We strive to be at the forefront of transportation analysis to provide support for the MPO, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), and the communities we serve.
 


Responsibilities

The individual in this position will support the Boston Region MPO’s programs and projects. The analyst will work in a variety of areas that include transit service planning, multimodal access studies, long-range transportation planning, and travel demand modeling. This position requires strong data analysis skills and the ability to effectively communicate results to both technical and nontechnical audiences. The successful applicant will excel in the following:
●      Applying quantitative analytical skills
●      Critical thinking about analysis methodology and data limitations
●      Analyzing large datasets, such as General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS), or US Census data
●      Working with relational databases, including writing queries, validating data, and combining data from multiple sources
●      Documenting analysis tools and methods
●      Developing tools and interactive applications to explore large datasets
●      Communicating orally and in writing, including synthesizing complex quantitative and qualitative information into concise, well-organized narratives or graphical displays for both technical and nontechnical audiences
●      Working both collaboratively and independently with strong personal initiative and working on multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to deadlines 
●      Working collaboratively to advance the state of the practice for transportation analysis tools at the agency



 

Qualifications

While the following sections describe required and desirable qualifications, CTPS is open to candidates who believe that their particular experience and skills fulfill the requirements.



Required

●      Proficiency in data analysis and visualization using R and/or Python and an understanding of relational databases
●      Proficiency processing and visualizing geospatial data
●      Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
●      Demonstrated ability to be open and receptive to new methods, tools, and technology
●      A bachelor’s degree in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field, transportation planning, geography, or GIS



Preferred

●      One or more years of experience
●      Familiarity with or interest in transportation planning
●      Knowledge of the Boston region and the MBTA
●      Understanding of transportation policy issues
●      Familiarity with GitHub or other version control platforms



Additional Information

This is a full-time position and the starting salary range is $60,000–$70,000 annually, contingent upon qualifications and experience.

CTPS offers excellent Massachusetts state employee benefits; a flexible, supportive, and family-friendly work environment; and a commitment to ongoing professional development. Our office is located in downtown Boston, in a transit-oriented and bicycle-friendly environment. We are currently working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the agency will pilot hybrid work schedules once a return to the office is initiated. The return to the office will be based on health indicators and guidance. All employees will be required to provide proof of vaccination status. Candidates must have legal authorization to work in the United States.
