Manager, Public & Media Relations

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Institute of Human Virology (IHV) is currently recruiting for a Manager, Public & Media Relations. This position will provide marketing and communication expertise to Maryland Global Initiative Programs in order to guide local communication and branding of the country offices. This position will be responsible for communicating the mission and vision of the University of Maryland School of Medicine international programs and promote  the international work within the organization, externally to funders, and to international global community. 

The position will be responsible for developing and disseminating visually appealing and concisely written materials for global health delivery, health systems strengthening and implementation science. The position will oversee and optimization of various communication channels and develop materials in various formats including web content, program briefs, blogs, training and presentations.

Essential Functions:
  • Develop materials targeting various constituents and stakeholders both domestically and internationally.
  • Develop a public relations strategies and tactics for represented International Programs.
  • Work with  the University and country office teams to develop mechanisms to carry out public relations plans.
  • Manages standard public relations situations, such as writing and editing, planning special events, working with vendors, handling constituent requests to ensure communications goals and objectives are achieved.  Communicates with faculty, staff and students.
  • Manages social media and raises visibility on the web.
  • Organize global conferences and other events aimed at improving visibility of IHV International Programs.
  • Guide and quality country offices communication and public relations delivery.
  • Plans and writes stories, drafts news advisories and releases.  Stories and articles may appear in publications or on the Web.
  • Provide editorial and design support for visually appealing presentations, publications and other program technical documents.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communication,  Public Relations, or related field.
Preferred Education: Master's degree preferred.
Experience: Five (5) years of experience in marketing, public relations, communications, or media, public, or client relations in an academic setting, or equivalent.  Prior experience working in public health communication field or global heath communications.
Supervisory Experience:  One (1) year of work coordination, scheduling, and training of others.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Possess a thorough knowledge in the area of public relations and media relations.  Able to perform position in compliance with all requirements, regulations, and laws.  Ability to maintain high standards with the work being performed and maintain awareness with trends and influences.  Assumes personal responsibility for all outcomes; makes effective and timely decisions; and learns how to effectively use technology.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Writes and presents information in a clear and concise way. Possess excellent communications and consultative skills. Interprets and understands written information and is able to listen attentively to verbal and non-verbal cues that lead to a deeper understanding. Ability to network and support effective partnerships with key groups and constituencies.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others. Demonstrate pleasant and positive interactions with other to meet customer expectations, and provide follow up with customers. Reaches compromise and consensus to influence and negotiate. Remains calm and is able to manage conflict, and works well with a diverse workforce. Approachable style allows others to be open in sharing thoughts and ideas.
  • Excellent writing skills and editing skills.
  • Proficiency in desktop publishing and other relevant software programs.

Hiring Range: $85,000- $90,000; commensurate with education and experience
