Firm Background:
Valerian Law is a social justice-oriented law firm representing plaintiffs in employment rights and consumer protection cases. We handle individual and class action cases in state and federal courts in California and beyond, from our home base in the East Bay near UC Berkeley. Our work includes recovering fair compensation, and improving workplace environments for workers and whistleblowers who are suffering wage theft, unequal pay, unsafe workplaces, retaliation, discrimination and wrongful termination.

Job Description: Assist with a variety of our civil rights and class action matters in a hands-on, substantive manner. Share in administrative operations for the office. Work closely with attorneys in all aspects of litigation and negotiation. Extremely substantive and intensive professional development opportunities are available in this position. This is a full-time, in-office position, with remote work supported in the event it is necessary under public health guidelines.

Pay: $25.00 per hour in first year, $27.00 per hour in second year. Overtime eligible.

Qualifications: To be eligible, applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree. We are not interviewing candidates who are seeking a gap-year position before law school, but rather would like to meet those who are interested in a permanent position or a 2-year commitment. Applicants should have:

·        familiarity with Microsoft Office (including Excel);
·        commitment to justice and compassion for clients in need;
·        excellent writing, proofreading and editing skills;
·        fastidious attention to detail and organizational skills, with an ability to multi-task;
·        initiative and energy to see projects to completion without frequent supervision; and
·        ability to work effectively in a team environment requiring close collaboration with diverse team members.

Additional desirable skills: Working fluency in a second language; Adobe Acrobat and LexisNexis or Westlaw. Valerian Law is strongly committed to EEO principles and values a diverse workplace.

Application Procedure: Applicants are encouraged to submit applications immediately as decisions will be made on a rolling basis. We require a detailed cover letter, resume, a school transcript if there is relevant coursework. Applicants may be asked to take short assessment tests. Applicants who are invited for interviews should also be prepared to submit one or two writing samples and should have three professional and/or academic references.
