Role Summary
The Undergraduate Research Fellow provides support for data and analytic projects in the Research and Data team as well as teams across the organization. The Fellow provides analysis of primary and secondary data sources to help answer important questions about Philadelphia and our regional economy. Their work will help shape policy responses in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and current recovery. In report writing, presentations, and data visualizations, specific attention will be paid to employment trends in local industry sectors and economic outcomes among vulnerable populations. At the end of their fellowship, the Fellow will be conversant in local labor market conditions and will have developed new or expanded skills in quantitative analysis. 

The Undergraduate Research Fellow is expected to work approximately 15-hours per week during the upcoming Fall semester. Successful applicants may have the opportunity to continue the fellowship into the Spring semester. 

This position will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Capture and interpret secondary data and research from multiple sources.
  • Capture primary data through web-based surveys and phone-based interviews with protocols.
  • Analyze data for integrity from multiple software platforms.
  • Respond to questions using data analysis and detailing the limitations of the information
  • Produce information products that are visually appealing under the supervision of senior staff members.
  • Analyze data using EXCEL, R, ArcGIS, and/or similar software.
  • Use software such as Excel, R, and Tableau to create compelling data visualizations.
  • Help design, edit, and format reports and presentations.
  • Learn new software and data systems to support projects.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

A hybrid, flexible work schedule will be made available. The Fellow will be expected to work in our City Center office a few days a week; the hybrid schedule will be discussed and finalized with the manager. 

Requirements
Education/Professional Experience

Applicant should be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program with Junior standing or higher and with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Preference will be given to applicants pursuing coursework in the social sciences, public policy, economics, urban studies, or a related field. All interested students are encouraged to apply.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • Philadelphia Works is willing to train and mentor individuals with limited experience.
  • A passion for and interest in quantitative analysis and social/public policy is required. 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Ability to explain technical issues to lay audience.
  • Ability to effectively relate to people of diverse educational and cultural backgrounds, government agencies, public officials, and all levels of management and staff.
  • Self-motivated, good organizational skills, detail-oriented, ability to prioritize, multi-task, and meet deadlines.
  • Enthusiasm for nonprofit, mission-driven work.
