We are currently seeking a Scientist / Engineer or Sr. Scientist / Engineer for our Polymer Science & Materials Chemistry Practice in Menlo Park, California. In this role you will work as part of an interdisciplinary team to contribute to a diverse set of projects ranging from electrochemical devices to medical devices, consumer electronics, and more. 

The ideal candidate will possess a well-developed understanding of macromolecules, electrochemistry, and materials characterization and have experience with the design, assembly, and execution of novel or non-standard testing. In addition, we desire an individual who is able to draw from 3-5 years of hands on experience with either electrochemistry, or macromolecule research and development, which may include work performed in pursuit of a doctorate degree. This individual will work with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers and will play a key role in designing and running experiments as well as interpreting and presenting data. On occasion this position may require some travel (limited during COVID-19) and will involve collaborating with staff from other Exponent offices and practices. The successful applicant will display excellent written and verbal communications skills and contribute in preparing reports and presenting results to clients. A long-term goal for a successful candidate will be to develop business by obtaining new projects and bringing new clients to the firm.

You will be responsible for: 
  • Testing and analysis of various materials in order to address their specifications and/or reliability in a variety of applications ranging from consumer products to medical devices  
  • Analyzing root cause of a wide variety of failures related to issues arising in development, manufacturing, or use of products in the medical device, consumer electronics, and transportation industries 
  • Gathering information and conveying technical conclusions to individuals in engineering, business, law, and industry

You will have the following skills and qualifications: 
  • Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field 
  • Well-developed understanding of macromolecules, elecrochemistry, and materials characterization 
  • Experience with the design, assembly, and execution of novel or non-standard testing  
  • 3-5 years of hands on experience with either electrochemistry or the physical, chemical, and mechanical behavior of macromolecules  
  • Experience with polymer processing, corrosion science and/or metallurgy, or energy storage systems is a plus 
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills 
  • Ability to work within project teams with strong desire to contribute; have potential for technical and project managerial leadership 
  • Must be able to convey complex technical information to individuals in engineering, business, legal and related industries
