CDC Health Equity Policy, Programs, and Initiatives Fellowship
CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Office of Minority Health and Health Equity (OMHHE) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
Research Project: Under the guidance of a mentor, this fellowship opportunity involves the fellow training and gaining experience focused on the science and practice of advancing health equity. This will include training and immersion experiences related to topics such as social and structural determinants of health, vital conditions for community health and well-being, health disparities, health inequities, and place-based health influences. Training also includes the development and dissemination of internal reports and other health equity-related communication documents.
Learning Objectives: The participant will:
- Participate in skills development and networking opportunities afforded by department and partner sponsored events.
- Hone networking and partnership analysis and development skills.
- Assist in policy landscape assessment to identify gaps in existing health equity work.
- Assist with developing and proposing policy evaluations in support of health policy and program recommendations.
- Assist in providing technical guidance to support formulation and examination of research, program, or evaluation questions.
- Assist with developing recommendations or evaluation plans for programs and initiatives to reduce health disparities and advance health equity.
- Exposures to strategies for informing and influencing decision making regarding development of infrastructures, agendas, and programs to advance progress towards health equity at various levels of government operation.
- Other related activities as discussed with mentor that further the science base regarding advancement of health equity, to include programmatic design and execution, health policy research, and implementation science that influence the full potential of the public’s health and wellbeing.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: August 16, 2022. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. Non-U.S. citizen applicants should refer to the Guidelines for Non-U.S. Citizens Details page of the program website for information about the valid immigration statuses that are acceptable for program participation.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications
The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Public Health, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Epidemiology, Data Science), or be currently pursuing one of the degrees with completion before the appointment start date. Degree must have been received within the past five years.
Candidates must be willing to travel and have a valid driver's license or other identification and documentation required for travel within the U.S.
Preferred skills:
- Subject matter expertise or strong research interest in minority health and/or health equity science
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills, as well as an ability to facilitate collaboration and feedback
- Experience in (health) policy research
