Intern - International Security Program/Defending Democratic Institutions Project (Fall 2022)

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide insights and policy solutions to decision-makers. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of more than 240 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security and U.S. foreign policy.

CSIS seeks a full-time intern to support the International Security Program (ISP) on research efforts related to cybersecurity, disinformation operations and related threats to the U.S. Justice System, civic education initiatives as well as various administrative tasks. ISP focuses on global security challenges, U.S. defense strategy, and intelligence issues. Key research areas include emerging threats and challenges to U.S. national security, U.S. military force posture and global force management, emerging technology, civic education efforts as it relates to national security interests, and overall national security policies. Interns should be motivated self-starters who enjoy a wide variety of research, analytic, and logistical task work and who can work quickly to meet a deadline.

Internships are seasonal and typically last three months with the possibility of extension up to six months at the discretion of the program. Applicants should indicate available start and end dates in their cover letter. Candidates will be considered without regard for physical location but must be legally eligible to work in the United States for the duration of the position. This internship is paid hourly.

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following

• Assist with ongoing research for projects focused on cybersecurity and disinformation policy.

• Assist with tasks supporting the CSIS ‘Civics as a National Security Imperative’ initiative.

• Conduct background research on a wide range of U.S. national security issues for ISP experts.

• Research and collaborate on timely, short publications.

• Assist in event planning, including drafting invitation letters, conducting background research, drafting questions, and staffing virtual events.

• Various administrative duties.

• Applicants must at least be a rising Junior at an undergraduate institution.

• Must have at least a 3.3 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) from an accredited U.S. institution or equivalent from a non-U.S. institution.

• Demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas intelligence reform, technology policy, cybersecurity, gray zone conflict, disinformation, and future warfare.

• Ability to distill and synthesize information.

• Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work independently and prioritize work appropriately, meeting all deadlines.

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

• Proficiency with Microsoft suite highly desirable.
