Future Leaders in Action Overview:

Future Leaders in Action (FLIA) cultivates leaders and strengthens youth-oriented nonprofits through a fellowship program. Fellows, individuals interested in entering the social sector, work on-site full-time at a partner nonprofit to develop or implement a pre-determined enrichment program.
Throughout the fellowship, fellows gain various professional skills including time-management, communication, program development, in a fast-paced, hands-on learning environment.

Start Lighthouse Overview:

Founded in Bronx, NY, Start Lighthouse is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to narrowing the literacy gap through a social justice lens. Start Lighthouse addresses the literacy crisis with a three-pronged approach to create compelling, rewarding reading experiences for children and families. Our method includes “Literary Adventures” hosted in conjunction with partner public schools to build home libraries and foster a sense of book ownership; diverse representation in the books we distribute so students see themselves in what they read; and community workshops to empower family members and caregivers to support literacy development, including their own.

Position Overview and Responsibilities:

You will…

  • Support the implementation of Start Lighthouse's Literary Adventures
  • Start Lighthouse's Literary Adventures are in-person interactive workshops led by nationally recognized and award-winning BIPOC authors and illustrators. Offered at Title I schools, the mission of the Literary Adventure is to engage and personalize students’ relationship with books. Students become consumers of books and understand the process of writing and illustrating a story. Students then actively engage in their own selection of books through our onsite bookshop, which provides them with an array of free, inclusive, engaging, and bilingual titles to build their home libraries. The program is being implemented at 8 schools across the Bronx.
  • Actively participate in weekly FLIA professional development responsibilities including check-in calls and virtual weekly leadership workshops.
  • Attend virtual leadership training retreat and in-person gatherings with local fellows.
  • Schedule speaker/book events with authors and illustrators.
By the end of the fellowship, you will have…

  • Supported the Literary Adventures’ program logistics and administration
  • Managed Start Lighthouse’s library (conducted research and managed review copies)
  • Supported the Executive Director with data collection by distributing and analyzing surveys to gather data about programs
  • Prepared, created, and implemented programming materials and workshops through the Literacy Hub(s)
  • Written one blog article for FLIA
  • Completed a final report and video about the fellowship

Position Qualifications:

  • Passionate about social sector
  • Use patience and tolerance to address problems
