Museum Education Associate

Position Overview
Museum Education Associates are members of the Museum’s engagement team with the primary role of assisting, facilitating, and leading museum education programs for our visitors. The work spans across our many audiences and program types, including facilitating gallery experiences for adult and family visitors, supporting our teen programs, leading programming in our ‘drop-in’ makerspace, and teaching student workshops. The successful candidate for this position will have a passion for engaging learners of all ages, have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, have experience teaching in a formal or informal environments, and have a background in a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) field. Familiarity with fabrication tools typically found in a makerspace, or common lab equipment a plus! This 6-month temporary position will include weekend work and occasional evenings. There is a possibility this 6-month term will be extended.
 
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
·     Ensure a warm, welcoming, and inclusive atmosphere for all Museum visitors and program and event participants.
·     Support and facilitate visitor programs in the Maker Hub makerspace, Learning Lab classrooms, The Exchange public presentation space, and exhibition galleries.
·     Support and lead workshops and classes for middle school and high school students, including preparation and clean-up of materials, equipment, and teaching space.
·     Support the volunteer program by facilitating alongside volunteers in the Maker Hub, Learning Labs, and galleries.
·     Support teen programs in the Museum during the school year and summer, including helping facilitate teen meetings and co-hosting teen events.
·     Facilitate outreach programs in the greater Cambridge area.
·     Support special events, occasional evening programs, and museum-produced festivals, including helping with set up, facilitation, participant registration, and other tasks as needed.
·     Responsible for preparing and maintaining clean, friendly, visitor-centric teaching spaces. Is expected to know and follow relevant Environmental Health and Safety Requirements.

Qualifications & Skills
Required:
·     Undergraduate degree in education or STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) field, or 3 years of relevant experience in informal education.
·     As a representative of the Museum, must be able to communicate effectively with MIT faculty, staff and students, as well as visitors of all ages and the youth and volunteers who work with us.
·     Demonstrated commitment to pursuing equitable access to STEAM for all.
·     Interest and ability to work in an ever-changing public-facing museum environment.
·     Excellent attention to detail while prioritizing safety, educational engagement, and service to our guests.
·     Demonstrated experience and comfort using new technologies, tools, and laboratory equipment.
·     Must possess demonstrated and contagious passion for learning and
·     Ability to prioritize tasks for self and youth and volunteers.
·     Ability to lift 40 pounds and stay active for two hours.
·     Weekend work and occasional evening work required.
 
Preferred:
·     Experience teaching and leading programs for different ages, including public presentations, leading hands-on science and engineering in makerspaces and/or art spaces.
·     Interest and demonstrated commitment to pursuing career in informal education.
·     Fluency in multiple languages helpful.
·     Basic experience with CAD (Computer-aided design) and/or other maker tools a plus.
