Associate Director, Electron Microscopy

The Associate Director of the Electron Microscopy (EM) Shared Resource is a staff scientist-level position that is responsible for providing the technical and administrative direction for electron microscopy as part of the Fred Hutch Shared Resource core labs. The newly-integrated Cryo-EM center serves the Fred Hutch, Seattle Children’s Hospital, and the University of Washington, and furthering its development and expansion is a critical component of this position.


Responsibilities


Responsibilities include providing consultation, guidance, and training in sample preparation, data acquisition, and analysis. Additionally, the Associate Director will manage a team of experienced electron microscopy technicians, who will be responsible for maintaining the instrumentation in good working order and ensuring users are trained to independence on these instruments as requested. Other responsibilities include maintaining up-to-date protocols and ensuring best practices are followed. This position will report administratively to the Senior Director of Molecular and Cellular Scientific Resources and scientifically to the Scientific Director of Cryo-EM.


Qualifications


  • A PhD degree or equivalent and extensive experience in all aspects of single particle analysis
  • Demonstrated experience in cryo-EM sample preparation, data collection, and image processing techniques
  • Experience with automated acquisition of high-resolution cryo-EM data
  • Deep knowledge of electron microscope instrumentation
  • Ability to mentor and manage junior staff
  • Clear communication skills and an ability to organize and document research data
  • Experience training users
  • Ability to multi-task and demonstrate good time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a research team
  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly incorporate new sample preparation, data acquisition, and image processing approaches
  • Ability to maintain a high level of professional expertise through familiarity with current scientific literature
