Position Summary
At this important moment for public health globally, the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health (MSPH) is celebrating its Centennial year and shaping a comprehensive campaign to enable progress towards its vision of a healthy and just world for all. The Director of Development in the Office of Development and Alumni Relations are key to this effort, working to secure the resources needed to advance the School’s work and deepen its impact during its second century.
Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Development for CUMSPH, the Director of Development is responsible for the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of $100K+ gifts from MSPH alumni and friends and building the major gifts pipeline. Working within the highly collaborative environment of MSPH’s alumni and development team, the Director of Development will play an integral role in achieving annual fundraising objectives. The Director of Development will collaborate with campus colleagues across academic and administrative departments to understand funding priorities and engage them as needed to build strong donor relationships.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee pipeline development for the major gifts program as the School prepares for a comprehensive campaign.
  • Independently manage a portfolio of 125 prospects through all phases of the giving cycle, from validation and engagement through cultivation, solicitation, gift negotiation, and stewardship. Prepare letters, briefings, proposals and materials that will ultimately lead to the solicitations and stewardship of major gifts.
  • Provide direction and ongoing feedback to at least one direct report and conduct regular meetings on progress against goals
  • Build and maintain relationships with faculty members and serve as department liaison for one or more MSPH departments or centers on issues related to strategy, fundraising, and events.
  • Evaluate various gift opportunities and giving vehicles; recommend the most suitable for particular donors.
  • Interact with contacts both within CUMSPH and across Columbia University, such as directors, faculty, officers and other Development staff, to consult on needs, formulate proposal strategies, and identify potential donors.
  • Meet agreed-upon moves management strategies for highest value portfolio prospects identified annually.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Development in the planning and execution of cultivation and solicitation events associated with the major gift program.
  • Actively maintain a current body of knowledge about MSPH’s programs, aspirations and development priorities.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as needed.
