Position Details
Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. SIP in partnership with the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) seeks one year-long GIS Support AmeriCorps member to play an essential role in expanding and improving the OSMRE Technical Support Division’s (TSD) GIS Library to potentially join the agency after service term completion.
 
The GIS Support AmeriCorps member is expected to work extensively with existing GIS systems, including the Watershed Cooperative Agreement Program (WCAP) GIS database, to add new data, create web maps, ArcGIS StoryMaps, etc.. During the year of service, the AmeriCorps member will have opportunities to travel to these sites where acid mine drainage is being treated and streams and rivers are being remediated. The content developed from these visits will help highlight the use of WCAP funding and its positive impact on communities affected by acid mine drainage. Additionally, the member will perform quality assessment and control with database entry for the TSD GIS library that is an archive of all final reports. There will even be an opportunity for the member to assist in GIS tasks that relate to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), that directed more than $11 billion towards abandoned mine land (AML) reclamation efforts spearheaded by State and Tribal AML programs in collaboration with OSMRE.
 
The GIS Support AmeriCorps member will conduct GIS work related to environmental database development, meta-data for existing GIS services, mapping, and develop content to share with the public for transparency in governance. The work performed in this role will improve existing GIS databases and services currently deployed by OSMRE internally and externally. This effort will be instrumental to present and future employees at OSMRE, as well as providing the AmeriCorps member with a strong foundation in the real-world applications and impact of GIS.
 
Position Responsibilities will include:
  • Adding new data, creating web maps and ArcGIS StoryMaps, etc. for the WCAP GIS database
  • Traveling with OSMRE staff to WCAP sites to help develop content to highlight WCAP funding for OSMRE
  • Performing quality assessment and quality control for the TSD GIS library
  • Creating new databases, web-GIS content, etc. to highlight new efforts and reclamation completed through the BIL AML program
  • Database management and creating web-based geoservices
  • Working with OSMRE staff to identify new and effective ways to communicate reclamation accomplishments to the agency and public at large
 
 Preferred Qualifications:
  • Physical or Environmental Science background (e.g., geology, hydrology, geography, geochemistry, engineering)
  • General computer skills
  • GPS/GIS experience preferable

Benefits:
  • Living Allowance: $465/week at 40hrs/week (pre-tax)
