Location: Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Ajo, AZ

Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is a UNESCO biosphere reserve located in the Arizona Sonoran desert. The park is home to both the senita and organ pipe cactus and is the only place in the US where the plants grow wild. Summers in the Sonoran desert can be extremely hot with temperatures exceeding 110 degrees and evening lows averaging 72 degrees. Winters can provide comfortable daytime temperatures with much cooler night time temperatures averaging 40 degrees.

The park is located 2 hours away from the cities Tucson and Phoenix, AZ which both host major airports and access to various amenities. The small town of Ajo, Arizona is located just 30 minutes outside of the park and is the closest town for access to several restaurants, a local grocery store, and a public library centers.

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $745/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.
 
Travel Allowance: The ACE Member is eligible for a reimbursable Not-To- Exceed amount of $500 to go towards travel.
 
Gear Allowance: The ACE Member is eligible for a reimbursable Not-To- Exceed amount of $100 to go towards the purchase of project related gear.
 
Housing: Housing will be provided by Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and is located in the Headquarters area. It is shared housing; the Member will have their own room but will share common areas with other members or seasonal staff. ACE Members will be accommodated in provided housing at no additional cost for the duration of the term.

Scheduling: The ACE Member will work with a work-lead to select a 40 hour-a-week schedule that works for the current projects; it may include a 4-10, 5-8, or 5-4-9s schedule.

Position Description: 
This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development in the field of cultural resource management and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with resource management professionals.

This position will work within the Cultural Resource Management Program at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. The member will work with the Archaeological Technician and Cultural Resource Program Manager. The Cultural Resource Program is part of the greater Resource Management Division, which also houses Wildlife Biology, Ecological Monitoring, Botany, and Geography Programs.

The member will assist the Archaeological Technician, who will serve as a work-lead, in on-going projects related to management of archaeological sites, historic structures, and cultural landscapes within the monument. Field based asks will include archaeological survey, recordation of new archeological sites, and monitoring of previously recorded archeological sites. Office work will include various data and record management tasks. Possible projects include hands-on historic preservation, cultural landscape documentation, and other opportunities as they arise.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a hiring authority upon completion of their term of service.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Members must be US citizen or Permanent Resident, as required to comply with U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A current and valid form of ID (will be required to provide copies of ID's upon hiring)
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term.

Preferred Skills:

  • Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a minimum of a bachelor's degree and/or have relevant experience in subject areas of archaeology and/or cultural resource management
  • Knowledge of archaeological field methods, experience with GPS, and work in a small team setting.
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors in a hot and rugged environment.
  • Deep interest in Southwestern archaeology and cultural resource management in a federal context
