Position Details
Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. SIP in partnership with the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) seeks one year-long GIS AmeriCorps member to play an essential role in expanding and improving the documentation of environmental issues encountered by the Tulsa Field Office using GIS mapping and database management.
Recently marking its 45th anniversary, OSMRE continues to ensure the cleanup of millions of acres of pre-Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) abandoned mine lands and the return of post-SMCRA mined lands to productive use by collaborating with State and Tribal partners, community organizations, and the industry. The GIS AmeriCorps member will be contributing to these efforts by working extensively with the Tulsa Field Office to use GIS in relation to the locations and digital files on environmental issues encountered by Tulsa Field Office staff. During the year of service, the AmeriCorps member will be locating and logging environmental features on active and abandoned mines. The member will have opportunities to gather field data with GIS Specialists working at OSMRE, seeing the active and abandoned sites firsthand. The work performed by the member will contribute greatly to documenting the environmental restoration work occurring and that will take place in the future.
The GIS AmeriCorps member will be providing direct benefits to communities and State and Tribal SMCRA programs by enhancing the available geospatial services provided by OSMRE. These enhanced services will provide easily digestible and visual coal mining data to help communities make informed decisions regarding coal mining and reclamation activities in their area. These efforts will provide immediate and lasting benefits to educational outreach programs as well. Additionally, the AmeriCorps member will focus on everyday GIS tasks and assignments supporting technical projects and investigations conducted by Tulsa Field Office personnel. This effort will be instrumental to present and future employees at OSMRE, as well as providing the AmeriCorps member with a strong foundation in the real-world applications and impact of GIS.
Position Responsibilities will include:
- Assisting in collecting and managing geospatial information related to coal mining for use by the government and public
- Providing maps and other visual products related to mining activities and environmental features
- Using ArcGIS Pro and other programs to create maps and visuals related to mining activities and environmental assessments conducted
- Testing and making recommendations using geospatial data collection
- Assisting with digitizing and georeferencing mine maps
- Analyzing remotely collected aerial images and geospatial data to produce maps that illustrate the effects of mining activities on the environment
- Assisting Tulsa Field Office investigations and projects
Preferred Qualifications:
- Background in Computer Science, Physical or Environmental Science (e.g., geology, hydrology, geography, geochemistry, engineering)
- General skills and knowledge of ArcGIS Pro, geospatial data collection, open access databases
- Familiarity with advanced remote sensing and GIS applications/practices
- Basic understanding of cartographic practices

Benefits:
- Living Allowance: $465/week at 40hrs/week (pre-tax)
- Successful completion of this term will award the AmeriCorps Segal Education Award of $6,345.00

Required Experience
