Civil-rights law-firm internship (remote during pandemic; unpaid)

The Chandra Law Firm LLC, based in downtown Cleveland, Ohio sometimes seeks part-time, school-academic-year interns to work remotely during the pandemic and learn about civil-rights law. (We will soon make a separate posting for our full-time, unpaid summer-internship program for college students, although you may apply now as instructed below for that opportunity as well. Just specify in your cover letter whether you wish to work part-time during the school year, want the full-time summer internship, or want to be considered for either.)

This is an opportunity for personal and professional growth in a collegial, small-firm environment with a fast-paced, high-profile practice focusing on civil rights, constitutional law, and white-collar-criminal defense. Current cases include police-misconduct (we were among the lawyers helping the family of the late Tamir Rice), First Amendment, sexual harassment, race and gender discrimination in employment, and whistleblower cases.

The main internship duties would include, but not be limited to, interviewing potential clients and preparing interview summaries for attorneys for evaluation; reviewing evidence including video recordings of police encounters and documents; drafting website content to educate the public about civil-rights law, and assisting with scheduling of and attending key meetings.

For more advanced candidates, or later in the internship, interns may be asked to assist attorneys with preparing pleadings, correspondence, and court filings; assist with more advanced case-document review, analysis, and organization; help attorneys prepare for depositions, mediations, and trial; and conduct fact investigation and appropriate legal research.

Preferred qualifications: Proficient with Microsoft Word, Adobe, and Excel. The firm is looking for someone who has a strong work ethic, possesses strong organizational skills, has strong writing skills, pays close attention to detail, can manage multiple priorities under stress, excels in a team setting, and has a professional, upbeat disposition and growth mindset.

Before applying, please visit www.ChandraLaw.com for information about the firm. Read about our civil-rights practice areas and our blog for stories about the types of cases and causes we champion.

Qualified candidates should submit the following in .pdf format through our hiring page, not here:

  • cover letter,
  • résumé,
  • list of three references, and
  • two unprivileged writing samples.

Chandra Law is an equal-opportunity employer, committed to effectively serving its diverse clientele. We strongly encourage applications from candidates from non-traditional legal backgrounds, including persons of color, persons of all genders and sexual orientations, first-generation professionals, and persons with disabilities.

Again, please apply through our website hiring page as linked above, not through Handshake.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis and so the internship may be full by the end of the process.

No telephone calls, please.
