Social Media Specialist

The Office of External Affairs encompasses three teams: 1) Communications and Marketing; 2) Development and Constituent Relations and 3) Finance and Administration. The award-winning Communications and Marketing team provides strategic communications, external and internal communications, and marketing services for the School across a variety of digital, print, and physical platforms. This includes brand and identity management, digital strategies and web services, editorial and content strategies, visual communications, media and public relations, social media, and integrated marketing campaigns.

We are seeking a Social Media Specialist (Website Specialist) who will work closely with colleagues in the Office of External Affairs to implement social media strategies for the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The Social Media Specialist will serve as a multi-platform content producer to support, manage, and develop the School's online presence. This includes day-to-day management of the School's primary social media accounts and other accounts as needed.

The primary focus of this position the School's social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn, and there may be opportunities to expand into additional platforms as well. This position reports to the Associate Director of Audience Development and is part of the larger award-winning Communications and Marketing team within the Office of External Affairs, which also includes editorial, design, web, and audience engagement teams.

The Social Media Specialist will support the conceptualization and execution of creative, high-quality content for both organic and paid outreach on social networks. The ideal candidate will have experience producing engaging content, some experience with paid social media marketing, and an interest in analytics reporting—especially in a research, non-profit, or higher-education institution. Experience in the field of public health could be beneficial but is not required.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Working closely with the Associate Director of Audience Development, the Marketing Strategist, and other colleagues, the Social Media Specialist will:

Content Development, Paid Advertising & Analytics:

• Produce content for—and oversee day-to-day programming on—the School's primary social media accounts, with occasional responsibilities related to accounts for Global Health NOW and the "Public Health on Call" podcast.
• Maintain an awareness of developments in the field of public health, and also major events around the School, in order to inform content and the School's social media programming calendar.
• Help grow subscription products such as email newsletters and help promote major events.
• Work with student groups and the Bloomberg School admissions team to develop social media content representative of Bloomberg School student experience.
• Maintain a distinct voice and tone for the School of Public Health's primary social media accounts.
• Assist with the development and implementation of paid marketing campaigns on Facebook, Instagram, and other social networks.
• Conceptualize and refine video projects that are produced in collaboration with colleagues on the Communications and Marketing team, and occasionally outside vendors.
• Brainstorm engaging campaigns to reach diverse audiences including but not limited to:prospective and current students, alumni, donors, faculty, staff, media, affiliated and unaffiliated friends, advocates, sponsors, partners and supporters of the School and public health overall.
• Track and analyze campaign and post metrics to ensure goals are met, and that social media activities are clearly linked to desired outcomes.
• Utilize self-serve dashboards and other analytics tools to develop reports as needed for use in meetings, proposals, etc. and also to occasionally share out best practices to colleagues and stakeholders throughout the School.

Partnerships, Collaborations & Misc. Responsibilities:

• Monitor public mentions of the Bloomberg School across social media.
• Assist with management of vendor relationships, including but not limited to social media, video, market research and metrics analysis.
• Evaluate emerging social media platforms and envision ways the Bloomberg School could use them effectively.
• Help support client departments throughout the Bloomberg School by advising and guiding them on appropriate social media content and strategies. The Social Media Specialist can convene social media practitioners from around the School for regular meet-ups and workshops as needed.
• Help maintain and periodically update the Bloomberg School's social media guidelines and work closely with the Associate Director of Audience Development to educate and inform Bloomberg School communications staff about the guidelines.
• Advise the Dean's Writer on social media best practices and identify opportunities for interactions with peer organizations and schools. Work with the Dean's Office and Internal Communications Specialist to assist with content creation based on the Dean's monthly calendar.
• Collaborate with social media practitioners in other divisions of Johns Hopkins University and Medicine as appropriate.
• Assist with crisis communications as needed.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

• Bachelor's Degree in Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations, Communications, English, or related field.
• Two years' experience in marketing or communications roles and demonstrated reliability in a communications environment.
• Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated versatility in writing styles, including social media posts, short pieces for the web, and marketing copy.
• An eye for design, and some experience with design software, i.e., Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Canva, etc.
• Basic familiarity with social media management platforms and analytics reporting, e.g., Facebook Insights.
• Creativity and confidence to pitch new ideas.

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits (semester hours) may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Proven experience developing original social media content on behalf of a brand or organization.
• Marketing or communications background in higher education, health, science, or journalism.
• Experience or interest in public health or higher education.
• Past work in video production and/or web design.
• Familiarity with Google Analytics and Google Ads.
• Early adopter of new media, social trends, and technology.
• Desire to grow and be challenged within a team.
• Content production for social media, search, web, video, etc.
• Ability to pull metrics for post-performance and interpret them.
• Excellent written communication skills.
