Research Network Engineer

JOB SUMMARY:
The University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Division of Information Technology (DoIT) seeks an enthusiastic & talented Research Network Engineer to our Network Services team.

UW is a comprehensive teaching, public service and scholarly research institution. Our faculty has enabled us to remain consistently ranked in the top 8 research institutions (by expenditures) in the U.S. for over two decades. We are comprised of 13 schools and colleges, over 24000 faculty and staff, a student enrollment of more than 45,000 with a $3.4B annual budget which includes over $1.3B in research expenditures.

DoIT is UW's central IT organization of over 600 IT professionals. We provide computer technology services to UW and a more limited set of services to UW System, other units of State government and other institutions in the region. DoIT delivers desktop, server and cloud computing services and supports networks, telecommunications, Internet connectivity, administrative and academic systems, security, instructional technology and other information technology services.

Network Services is a department within DoIT that is responsible for the operations, administration, management and support of the campus and wide-area networks and certain network-based applications such as unified communications. The department performs long-range planning, design, procurement, installation and maintenance of a broad range of network services, including access to several telecommunication networks we operate (e.g. UW-System Network, BOREAS-Net, MUFN), the Internet and special-purpose high-speed research networks such as Internet2 and ESNet. The department also provides certain cyberinfrastructure support to facilitate faculty research.

Your role will be responsible for providing consulting and advanced network engineering and technical planning, design and support to campus researchers in pursuit and/or execution of network-intensive research grant activities that require cyberinfrastructure connectivity to the networks we support. This includes working with a team to design, configure, install and maintain switching and routing infrastructure, network automation as well as develop in-house, open-source and/or commercial network management and monitoring tools.

The position reports to the UW-Madison Division of Information Technology (DoIT) Assistant Director of Networking - WAN Engineering and functions under general supervision within a team.

EDUCATION:
Preferred
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Sciences, Information Technology or related field at an accredited college or university

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:
-In-depth knowledge and/or experience with network technologies, concepts and protocols such as Ethernet, TCP/IP, MPLS, OSPF, BGP, OSPF, RIP, SNMP, Netflow
-Excellent teamwork, relationship building, written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
-Strong diagnosis and problem-solving skills to provide solutions to often first time encountered issues on vendor products
-Significant knowledge and experience with design, configuration, implementation and maintenance of advanced network technologies and networks (required for level IV)

Preferred:
-Knowledge and experience with network design or configuration, implementation and maintenance of advanced network technologies and networks
-Knowledge and experience with programming and scripting languages and techniques for networking environments such as Ansible, Python, PERL, bash or csh
-Knowledge and experience implementing overlay technologies such as EVPN, MPLS or VXLAN
-Knowledge and experience with UNIX/LINUX, UNIX shells and UNIX-based network utilities
-Experience developing and implementing solutions at the scale of a Research University or large enterprise organization
-Experience working in a highly distributed university environment
-Knowledge and experience collaborating with university research faculty and staff on aspects of research cyberinfrastructure such as federal government or higher education data networks, research high performance or high-throughput computation resources, large data set storage and transfers, research virtual organizations, scientific applications, data analysis/visualization, grant proposal development or scientific workflows

This position is eligible for any of the following: partial remote work; or fully on-site. Remote work requires an approved remote work agreement (RWA) agreement. An RWA requires successful candidates to possess their own high-speed internet and phone to perform the work on a university provided computer.

Minimum $84,800 ANNUAL (12 months)
