Position Description:

The nonprofit One World Surgery (www.oneworldsurgery.org) operates an ambulatory surgery center located on the grounds of NPH Dominican Republic. The Communications and Operations Assistant will provide strategic day-to-day support for the Communications team located in Chicago and Chief Executive Officer to ensure the ongoing caliber of One World Surgery’s work and communication with internal and external partners and donors. This volunteer will also support the operations team (Medical Director and Programs Coordinator) with tasks related to patient care, preparation and execution of Primary Care medical missions, networking, and research.

Position Requirements:

  • Successful volunteers at NPH have strong leadership skills, are resilient and flexible, and work well in teams.

Language Requirements:

Strong Spanish language skills are critical for success as a volunteer with NPH. NPH tests Spanish language skills of candidates invited for an interview. Applicants who do not have an adequate level of Spanish will be required to attend immersion school prior to beginning service with NPH at their own expense.

Other Responsibilities
Each volunteer chooses an hogar (group of children of the same age living together) at the beginning of their year. Each home’s Volunteer Coordinator will communicate the expectations for hogar time. Usually, it is six days a week, 6 to 8 p.m., but this might vary per home. This has been described as the most fulfilling part of volunteering, the bond and relationships formed with their hogar of children.
Volunteers have every other weekend off, as well as up to 22 days of vacation time after four months of service. Vacation must be arranged according to the specific home’s policies.

All NPH volunteers receive room and board, access to medical care, international health insurance, and a monthly stipend. Volunteers pay for their transportation to and from the home and domestic medical insurance. Volunteers must serve for at least one year.
