Science Informationist

The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) Library and Archives seeks a highly motivated, collaborative, and enthusiastic Science Informationist to join an established team of information professionals that serves the research community of CSHL. This is an opportunity to work with prominent scientists, postdocs, and grad students at the forefront of research in molecular biology, genomics, quantitative biology, plant biology, and neuroscience at our world-renowned biomedical research institution. The qualified applicant will strive to become an effective member of research teams and improve research output within the CSHL Community.
The responsibilities of this position include: serving as liaison to our research laboratories by forging relationships with faculty, students, and staff; and creating innovative information resources that respond to trends in scientific research. The candidate will also help manage the CSHL Institutional Repository and assist in grant writing for Library and Archives special projects.
The Science Informationist reports to the Executive Director of Library and Archives.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

- Investigate research practices, review newly published literature and information resources related to data planning, use, organization, management, storage, and curation

-Ensure that publicly funded research at CSHL is freely available in PubMed Central, following the requirements of NIH public access policy.

- Offer subject training opportunities to the CSHL scientific community in reference management, bibliometric databases and tools, and related areas of interest.
- Maintain and lead the CSHL Institutional Repository, a comprehensive database of scientific publications originating from CSHL from 1890-present, including creating metadata for publications and research data and the Faculty Profiles database

- Serve as liaison to our research laboratories by forging relationships with faculty and students and creating innovative information resource tools that respond to trends in scientific research.
- Provide information services to graduate students, faculty, and researchers throughout the research life cycle.

- Maintain CSHL LibGuides on topics related to the Lab’s research including electronic lab notebooks and reference management software as well as other databases and tools.

- Provide expertise in utilizing databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science in addition to web content management tools.
-Participate in educational programs including our Science Journal Club for high school students.
-Other tasks as assigned

Education: Advanced degree or master degree in the life sciences, library science, or a related discipline.
Experience: 1-3 years’ experience working in a life sciences academic environment.
A passionate interest in current Life Sciences research and experience in science communication.
Knowledge of medical, biological, chemical or allied subjects
Experience in laboratory environment or as a member of a research team is a plus.

Skills: Skill in searching major online databases, such Pubmed, Scopus. Familiarity with research and teaching information needs in the life sciences. Must be strongly computer literate. Knowledge of the publication process in sciences. Ability to comprehend the current research projects within the CSHL community. Ability to train others on the various platforms provided by the Library including, research information management systems, databases, reference management software (EndNote, Mendeley, Papers) etc. Ability to work with faculty, students, and staff from diverse cultural backgrounds. Excellent interpersonal, multitasking, verbal and written communication skills are required.
