Cyber Operations Teaching Assistant

Job Description
Teaching Assistants (TA) are needed for a 8-week long fall course called Girls Who Run Cyber Operations! at the MIT Beaver Works Summer Institute (BWSI), called Cyber Operations (CO). Cyber Operations is a pilot course and operationally-aligned refactor of Cyber Security for Software Intensive Systems (CSIS).

The fall course will be taught virtually alongside MIT Lincoln Laboratory staff. In this course students will learn how to interact with remote computer systems and explore the fundamentals of practical software security.

The fall course will be taught October 15 – 10 December 2022 over ~8x Saturdays.
Students will enter the course with exposure to programming, computer networks, and cybersecurity. The summer course introduces security concepts through layered repetition and infusion of guest lectures from industry experts. The fall course is an accelerated overflow course for Girls. The spring course is a preparatory course for summer.

Through projects and challenges, students will learn about network security, intelligence analysis, digital forensics (network and host), and offensive security practices. Students will be empowered to lead each other and work together to solve complex problem, and sometimes under high-stress scenarios. We will also provide students the opportunity to perform hands-on activities culminating in a digital field training exercise.

TAs for this course will have the opportunity to help support the course’s curriculum and will aid in teaching the students throughout the session. This position provides candidates with excellent experience in project-based development and prototyping, teaching, and team management.

Job Requirements

·       Current undergraduate or graduate student in Cyber Security, Digital Forensics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or another technical field
·       Good communication skills and ability to convey technical concepts concisely to audiences with limited background
·       Interest in cyber security, course development, and educational instruction
·       Willingness to quickly learn new technical concepts and apply them to new fields

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Ability to write standardized documentation or instruction sets clearly and effectively
  • Intermediate knowledge in virtualization
  • Basic knowledge of common Internet protocols and networking
  • Understanding of common open-source tools:
  • Ie. Wireshark, TCPdump
  • Familiarity with publicly-available web-based tools:
  • Ie VirusTotal, WHOIS
  • Familiarity with Linux, Windows, or MacOS
  • Familiarity with specialized OS (SANS SIFT/Remnux or Kali)
  • Intermediate knowledge in the Python or Bash
  • Wargame and capture-the-flag experience a major plus
  • CTFd
  • TryHackMe
  • HackTheBox
  • HackThisSite
  • Ideally, experience with computer networks and exposure to network security concepts
