Internship, Global Gender Practice - Paid Internship

Background
TechnoServe works with enterprising people in the developing world to build competitive farms, businesses, and industries. We are a nonprofit organization that develops business solutions to poverty by linking people to information, capital, and markets. Our work is rooted in the idea that given the opportunity, hard working women and men in even the poorest places can generate income, jobs and wealth for their families and communities. With five decades of proven results, we believe in the power of private enterprise to transform lives.

TechnoServe is committed to advancing gender equality and is guided by our Gender Equality Policy, recently updated in 2022, which necessitates actions focused on both our programming and our corporate practices and culture. By investing in gender equality and women’s economic empowerment, we increase project effectiveness, strengthen our organization, and mobilize greater resources. We recognize that maximizing the inclusive economic growth that is required to achieve widespread prosperity requires the full and unencumbered participation of women and girls.

Internship

The Gender Practice leads TechnoServe’s efforts to fulfill its Gender Equality Policy and advance women’s economic empowerment across its programs in entrepreneurship, agriculture – especially coffee – and food processing practice areas. It delivers targeted technical assistance to programs, builds a foundation of knowledge and best practice resources associated with gender equality and women’s economic empowerment, and works with a network of Gender Champions situated across the organization.

In 2022, TechnoServe updated its organizational strategy and set an ambitious goal of ensuring 50 percent of those who financially benefit from our programs are women. For the first time in 2021, women made up 41% of its beneficiaries, surpassing our previous target of ensuring women make up 40% of beneficiaries. The pathway to achieving our goal of reaching women beneficiaries in future years is not assured. Between 2018 and 2020, the share of women beneficiaries has been between 38 and 39 percent. A number of factors contribute to our ability to reach our goals of reaching women. We are improving the design of new programs to more intentionally address gender inequalities, and are working with programs to adopt good implementation and gender-responsive monitoring and evaluation practices.

At the same time, we need more information about the different mix of programs –scale, the programmatic area (e.g., agriculture, coffee, entrepreneurship), region, etc. – that can help us reach our goals to better inform a strategy over the next three to five years. This internship aims to help us develop a more concrete strategy to reach women beneficiaries through an analysis of past and current data impact data. The activities include:

  • Review corporate measurement and impact data on the share of women beneficiaries from the last three years and other documents relevant to the analysis
  • Analyze the factors that influence the increase/decrease in the share of women beneficiaries
  • Model 2-3 scenarios identifying the composition of programs (e.g., region, scale, area of excellence, type of gender project, etc.) needed for the organization to grow its share of women with recommendations
  • Develop slide deck with analysis and recommendations
  • Present deck to Gender Practice, Impact Team, and others

Required Skills & Experience
  • Working towards graduate degree in Economics, Feminist Economics, International Development, or related field
  • Interest in international development, gender equality and women’s economic empowerment
  • Excellent quantitative research and evaluation skills, with experience in data analysis and scenario modeling
  • Excellent writing, editing and communications skills
  • Polished skills in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word; Salesforce experience a plus
  • Enthusiastic self-starter; proven ability to work independently
  • Proven team player with strong interpersonal and cross-cultural skills

To be considered, please submit a resume and short writing sample (approx. 1 page).
We are seeking an intern for between 8 – 10 weeks, at full or part-time (or a mix) depending on availability. Interns should have access to their own computer.
