2023 Intern Research – Exploratory Computer Sciences Sr Researcher

Your Role and Responsibilities
Start and end dates for this Internship are during Summer 2023 (12 weeks) at IBM Research.At IBM Research, we invent things that matter to the world. And looking to the horizon, we are placing big bets on a pipeline of ambitious exploratory science breakthroughs which will be foundational for the future of computing. We are driven to discover. With more than 3,000 researchers in 12 labs located across six continents, IBM Research is one of the world’s largest and most influential corporate research labs.
The Exploratory Computer Sciences program at IBM Research is seeking candidates who will contribute to foundational research topics in AI, Hybrid Cloud and HCI.
Candidates should possess a background in Computer Sciences with graduate-level studies in one of:
  • AI/ML: neuro-symbolic models, foundation models, natural language processing, decision support, causal reasoning, knowledge graphs, semantic web
  • HCI: human-centered AI, explainable AI, conversational AI, speculative design, quantitative & qualitative methods (including thematic analysis & grounded theory)
  • Hybrid Cloud
  • Edge Computing
  • Networking

We expect to have the program in person. in which case candidates would need to work in one of the following locations: USA (Yorktown Heights, NY, Almaden, CA; Cambridge, MA), Israel (Haifa), Japan (Tokyo), Zurich (Switzerland).

Required Technical and Professional Expertise
  • Must have a background in one of
  • AI/ML: neuro-symbolic models, foundation models, natural language processing, decision support, causal reasoning, knowledge graphs, semantic web
  • HCI: human-centered AI, explainable AI, conversational AI, speculative design, quantitative & qualitative methods (including thematic analysis & grounded theory)
  • Hybrid Cloud
  • Edge Computing
  • Networking
  • Must have Graduate level experience in conducting research in one or more of the above topics
  • Must have a Track record of co-authoring technical reports and publications
  • Must have strong programming skills in one or more commonly used languages such as: Java, JavaScript, Python, C++, Etc.
  • Must have strong communication skills
  • Must be a current Ph.D. candidate

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise
  • Experience with machine learning environments (e.g., R, Scikit-learn, Theano, PyTorch, etc.),
  • Contributions to open-source contributions
  • Experience in doing software development as part of a research and development team
