Public Health Educator

Chenango County Public Health Department, Norwich, NY

Responsibilities/Duties:
An employee in this class has the responsibility for promoting public health and providing public health education services to individuals and groups within the County. The incumbent applies the principles of behavioral sciences in public health education programs to influence health related attitudes and to foster adaptation of behavior that will improve or maintain good health. The Public Health Educator is also responsible for planning and implementing the Public Health Department’s in-service training program. Travel is required to fulfill the duties of this position, may occasionally be required to work evening and/or weekend hours.

Minimum Qualifications:
EITHER:
(A) Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Education, Health Science, Public Health, Health Promotion, Community Health, or Health Communications; OR

(B) Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Nursing, Epidemiology, Wellness and Fitness, or Nutrition AND one year full-time paid experience or its’ part-time equivalent in health education; OR

(C) Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Human Services, Social Work or Psychology AND two years full-time paid experience or its’ part-time equivalent in health education; OR

(D) Possession of a Master’s Degree in Public Health or Health Education.

Note: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. A list of acceptable companies who provide this service can be found on the Internet at http://www.cs.ny.gov/jobseeker/degrees.cfm. You must pay the required evaluation fee.

Special Requirements:  
1. At time of appointment and continuing throughout employment a 
   candidate/incumbent must possess a valid New York State Driver’s License, a reliable 
   vehicle, and a driving record acceptable to the County’s insurance carrier.

2. In order to fulfill the duties of this position, a Public Health Educator may 
   occasionally be required to work evening and/or weekend hours.

3. Within one year of appointment, incumbents must satisfactorily complete 15 hours of continuing education in health education related topics approved by the New York State Health Department.

Salary:
$23.97 per hour
